We, the pupils in King Class Canonbury School, felt excited taking part in this project because we knew that we would be able to develop certain skills alongside learning about different paintings. We were amazed to find out that we could ‘read’ pictures – and that left some of us gobsmacked!
We were impressed at the skills the artists used in each of their paintings and the level of minute details they included – especially the tents and the castle in the background of ‘Hawking in the Olden Times’.
We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the stories behind each of the paintings we studied and through these, we learnt a lot about artists’ history and other historical projects they were involved in e.g. Landseer’s design of Trafalgar Square in London. We also learnt a lot about customs and cultures of different times and how peoples’ dress show their importance in their lifestyle e.g. Mrs Musters as Hebe.
Although we all had our own favourite paintings, we all had our own interpretations of the events and how the different characters were feeling in each painting. This helped us in our writing because we could use our own words. Our descriptive vocabulary, our use of a thesaurus and our imaginations grew as we discovered hidden worlds in between paintings. Our ‘working walls’ and classroom resources became invaluable to us throughout our writing. Just from looking at the pictures, we were able to conjure up powerful images to base our writing on.
100% of the children in our class feel that this project has helped us move up levels in our writing because of the use of descriptive writing and in addition, our knowledge of different writing genres has also greatly expanded!

I really enjoyed our Art project and I wish we could do it again.
