  1. Year 4 at Gillespie have really enjoyed Writing Through Art so far especially being able to see how London has changed over time. It’s also great combining and English and Art and we can’t wait to come to Kenwood House.

  2. Year 4 at Canonbury loved studying this artwork last week, we did some fantastic writing and some artwork based on reflections. We all had some fantastic ideas about where we would like to live in London at the time of the painting – we’ll leave you some comments below.

  3. Hi I am Rashid in Canonbury and I like the painting of London bridge because of the calmness of the water that can provide the reflection. I would prefer to live on the North side because there is less poverty and crime. It’s also because it is the wealthier side and I wouldn’t prefer to be poor on the south but live better on the north.

  4. I would rather live on the north side of London Bridge because it is richer and has nicer houses. Also because on the other side there was more crime.

  5. Ive really been enjoying looking at London bridge. It has really showed me what it would be like in medieval London. It also has taught me a lot about what has happened to the river Thames in the cold winters and when the water was passing through the cramped arches!

I’d live on the north side of London bridge because even though all the fun is on the south side their was a lot of crime , poverty and nobody would would like to wake up and when they walk across the bridge see heads set on spikes which is very unsettling. The north side was also richer and wealthier.

  6. I am Ben.I have been learning and studying about London bridge and in my opinion I would rather live on the North bank not the South bank because on the South side of the bridge it has heads on sticks with traitors heads and lots of poverty and crime. However it does have fun things like bear fighting and circuses. It is also really poor on the South. The North is a wealthier place. So I would rather live on the North bank.

  7. I love how much detail Claude de Jong put into this painting! I would rather live in the middle of the bridge because you could access both sides. If I lived on the South side it is most likely for me to get sick because of it’s super busy! The North side would have more crimes so would you like to lose your money?People could say your spoilt because your rich and wealthy.

  8. I would want to be on the South side because it was more fun, they had shops and bars and movie theaters- it would be too crowded to live on the bridge itself!

  9. Hi I will like to live on the north side of old London bridge because it was rich and safe and you can cross the bridge to have fun anyways.

  10. I chose to be on the south side because it’s more fun! There are theaters however there is lots of crime but the fun is better!

  11. I like the reflection of London bridge because the illusion of reflection is made by concave and convex surfaces any time of better seeing, if I was there I would see my reflection in the river.

  12. I would like to live north side on London bridge 600 years ago. They have better built houses .On the south side there is a lot of crime and poverty. There were 30 traitors’ heads counted.Even though the south side has all the fun stuff, the houses were badly built. There was a lot of viruses on the south side.

  13. If I was living 400 years ago I would live on the north side of the bridge because It was more wealthy , there was less poverty and it was richer. I wouldn’t live on the south side because there would be a horrible view of head on spikes, although there was a lot of fun there was also more poverty.

  14. I loved looking at this picture I would love to see what it actually looked like in the past.

I would like to live on the north side of the bridge because on the other side there is a lot of crime.

  15. I loved writing through art because it is a mix of the two best subjects and I would rather live on the North side of the river because there were better built houses and less crime . anayway I could always go over the bridge to the other side for some of the entertainment . wouldn’t you want to know you were safe when you went to bed at night .

  16. London bridge was one of the Several bridges named London Bridge have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and in central London. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a bridge built from concrete and steel.

  17. i would like to live on the south side of London bridge because it has more entertainment like pubs, eating houses.

  18. I love the detail of the painting!I would want to live on the North Side because it is better built. The second reason is that the South Side has a lot of entertainment but if you lived on that side your house would fall down into the deep depths of the Thames. The final reason is that if you were against the king and Queen your head would be cut off.

  19. I really enjoyed looking at the old London bridge painting. If I lived in London 400 years ago I would like to live on the bridge because it would give me the best of both

  20. Hi my name is adem I would rather live on the south side because you can ganble and you can go to the pub

  21. I loved looking at the art work and decided that I would like to live on the North side because although the south side is more fun with gambling , bear fights and pubs there is more crime and dirt on the streets. Also the North side is richer and earns more money .

  22. Hi my name is Amani, in art we learnt about reflections of London bridge it was really fun and I cant wait to go to Kenwood house. If I was living at the time I would like to live on the North side because there is more business and more shops

  23. I really like this painting because they detailed the painting very well and also if I was alive around that time, I’d go north because south has 30 traitor heads, poverty around and its very aggressive.

  24. I loved this painting. All the features were amazing like the heads on spikes. I would like to live on the north side of the river because it didn’t have a lot of crime and poverty. Although the south side had more fun places like Shakespears globe, it had lots of crime and poverty too.

  25. If I was in there I would like to live on the North side because on the South side there is poverty. The South side is poor but there is great entertainment there. The North is much more richer and have loads of business.I like the the Painting a lot beacause i like to know what happened in the olden days.

  26. Hi my name is Massih i love realistic paintings the north side is much better but on the bridge your in the middle so you can go to both sides.

  27. I enjoyed this project on old London bridge because i was surprised on how much it has changed. I would like to live on the south side because all the fun and entertainment. I would not live on the north side because they had nothing fun to do but the north side was richer.

  28. Hi I’ve learned about reflections the London Bridge also I had fun learning about it now i’m excited to go Kenwood house and I would rather live on the North side because the South side is poor and the North side is rich and South side has more crime.

  29. I have really enjoyed this project. It is amazing to see the massive change from the 16th century to the 20th century.I love the fact that London was one of the wonders of the western world. It looks just as busy that long ago as it is now.I am so really ecstatic that we are going to Kenwood house and all the phenomenal pictures.

    1. Thank you Teddy. We’re really pleased your enjoying the project and we hope you enjoy the second painting too.

  30. I have really enjoyed learning about old London bridge. There were around 190 houses and shops. We all really enjoed drawing the reflections.I would like to live on the north side more than the south side.

  31. I really enjoyed the painting we were looking at last week because it was really interesting looking at how London was that long ago.In art we were looking at the reflections and it was really fun and i`m really excited to go to Kenwood house. If i could live back then i would live on the North side because it was richer nicer houses and businesses. Even though the south side had more fun opportunities such as theatres circuses and bear fights i could still go there any time and go back to the safe North side. Also London bridge would be too busy dirty and noisy i think the north side is better.

  32. I love this painting because it would be nice to see old London bridge and it would also be nice to live on the north side of the bridge too.

  33. I liked the painting because I saw a lot of good details and I saw lots of things from the olden days like old London bridge and old wooden houses and also old river Thames.

  34. I really enjoyed this project about old London bridge and If I lived back in those days I would choose to live on the North side instead of the South side. The reason I have chosen the North side is because on the South side it is dirty, poor and on the South side there are burglars that can steel stuff of of you.On the North side the houses are much more neat and there are much more good shop sellers.Although I am on the North side I can travel over to the South side and see all the entertainment and fun just like bear fights and things like that and then I could travel back to the North side and do more of the fun activities over there. So I could keep travelling there and back.I also love that London bridge is the first bridge that is built by stone.

      1. Thank you for this comment Michael I really enjoyed the painting and I am exited to go to kenwood house.

  35. I really enjoyed learning about Old London bridge. We had fun drawing reflections of the bridge and learned so much. For example:London bridge had 190 houses and shops built on it!
If I were alive 400 years ago I would live on the north bank.Even though the south side had all the entertainment ,I could go visit the south side.I would live on the north side because its richer.

I loved learning about Old London bridge!

    1. Thank you Mariam. Yes the bridge must have been very narrow and difficult to cross with 190 houses on it.

  36. I would like to live on the North side because the houses are safer and there is less poverty and crime. Also, the North side is richer than the South side.

  37. If i lived on London bridge, i would live on the north side because it has the entertainment and all the good things on it like the Globe Theatre and all different things what is fun to do and it will be nice to see the river every day. On the river there is a lot of boats there i would get on a boat some days.

  38. The grey and dull colours used in the painting makes it look like a really boring and crime filled place. Although it look like a terrible place to live, I’ve learnt that the south side has a lot of entertainment but once again there is still crime and poverty. Over all, living back then would not be the greatest but living on the north side would be the best way to be healthy, rich and safe,

    1. Thank you Kristen. I like the way you are considering how the colours impact on the mood of the painting.

  39. Last week we were learning about Old London Bridge and we did a whole art lesson about it and we actually drew the bridge .I would rather live on the North side because it is richer than the South side, but the South side has to much crime.

  40. I really liked looking at old London Bridge because it shows what London used to look like. I’d preferred to live on the south side despite it having crime and poverty because it has more entertainment,Id also not want to live because whenever I wake up I,d feel like I’d plunge in to the depths of the River Thames.

  41. I really enjoyed learning about old London bridge and how it would be like to live so long ago.I would like to live on the north side even though the south side had more
    entertainment it had more poverty.

  42. I love the fact London Bridge was the first stone bridge in London.I would live on the North side because it is the richest side and the south side was just a walk away so I could walk there for entertainment!

  43. Last week we were learning about old London bridge. And we was choosing the North side or the south side of the bridge, so I picked the North because the south side has to much crime and the Bridge is to scary.

  44. I think its better to live on the north side because its richer and less crime. On the south side it’s poor, also on the south there’s heads on spikes so you would not want to walk across the bridge!

  45. I would like to live in North London because there are nice places to live and do entertaining things and have fun. London bridge has lots of boats and I would like to get on one of them some times and have a good time.

  46. Hi I’m Iyden, I would live on the south side , it is more fun than the north side and all of the things are cheaper then the north side. i hope you like this.

  47. I was nice looking at the old London Bridge last week ,it was built in /1209\and fell down in /1830\, if i lived at that time i would have lived on the north side because it,s more richer than the south side and it also has less crime and the south side has more crime , we learnt that when we looked at a painting of London Bridge painted by a dutch artist in about fore weeks we are going to kenwood to look at famous paintings.

      1. You are very welcome, the painting is very inspirational in many different ways such as many small details in the painting such as 2 potted plants and the heads set on spikes which is quite spectacular

  48. I really liked learning about this I would live on the left side since it’s rich, clean and pretty if you would like to live on the right side perfer not to go to the left side i really enjoyed it was a very intresting and fun to learn about.

  49. I love learning about old London bridge, it was really interesting about the spikes on the building and about the poor and rich side of London bridge. I would live on the left side because maybe it could be better because it is more rich and clean. My least favourite part is when I see funeral boats. I really think London bridge is really fascinating.

  50. Hi my name is Mason i’m loving learning about the history of London its probably the best thing iv’e learnt i have been loving it.

  51. I like the left side because it is clean, beautiful, and nice. There are maids that clean for you. You can buy stuff that are very expensive and nice

  52. Hi I am Mahdi,I love learning about the history of london , it is so fascinating compared to what it is today.I am just curious, why did they use the bridge for civilization they could of found more land?

  53. Hi am Aniya,I love learning about old London bridge. It’s so cool to learn about old London bridge because one side is the poor side and the other side is rich. And if you look
    at the closely on

  54. I would like to live on the left side of the painting because even though it is cheap it doesnt smell that bad and i woudnt like to see a funeral outside my window!

  55. I would like to live on the right side because i would not like to suffer in poorness also in those times i felt how those people felt at that time.

  56. Man i really like old London because i like that the money was old, and different. And i would love go to back in time and see olden days and see the queens tower!

  57. I didn’t know that there were heads on spikes in old London and I didn’t know that the bridge was re-built overtime as well.

  58. My name is Adem and if I would live on the old london bridge I would live on the south side because there are bear fights.

  59. I love this painting because it was old and fashionable. I like how the artist gave it a mood of excitement with people enjoying the ice.

  60. you shall go to go to the side of London because if you go to the left side if you do a crime then you will get your head chopped off and boiled!

  61. At Laycock, we really enjoyed debating which side of the bridge we would prefer to live on, it was a 50% split!

  62. Anisha agreed with Julia and also thought it would be better to live on the right side of London Bridge.

  63. This is a great painting for starting a discussion and hearing other people’s point of view! It is also a terrific painting for showing details and perspective. Well done Claude de Jongh! He makes us think that this view stretches back for miles into the distance and it is actually painted on a wooden panel which is completely flat!
Some amazing artwork on reflections from you as well and congratulations for all the great writing too!
