  1. The director put the flashback in the middle of the film because it gives more information and it helps you understand the character and context. It also help you to understand why the boy wanted the umbrella.

  2. The director put the flashback in the middle of the film because it impacts the audience and builds emotion

  3. I liked the umbrella story because it made me feel different emotions like sorry when the boys flashback happened and I also liked it because at one moment it was happy then at other moment it was sad.

  4. The flashback I would choose to put in the film, would be the girl playing with her toys to show how she loved the toys before she gave them away.

  5. The flashback I would choose to put in the film would be a flashback of why the girl went to that children home. So what she was doing before she went to the children home. It would happen when all the children open the box of toys that she brought.

    1. That’s a great idea Juliette. It would be interesting to see the girls home in contrast to the boys.

  6. In class we wrote a narrative inspired by the film Umbrella. I hope you enjoy reading it.

  7. In class we wrote a narrative inspired by the film Umbrella. I hope you enjoy reading it.

  8. I liked the film a lot because it was really engaging. It showed the difficulties that orphans and refugee’s experienced. This film made me feel sad for the refugee’s and orphans but near the end of the film it made me feel happy because it ended in a good way. It also left me with lots of questions like where his dad is and how the umbrella shaped his life.

I think the director put the flash back in the middle of the film because it was the answer to the first part of the story.

I think that the still images in the end were so you can see what happened near the end. The still images also explained what Joseph and Helena done with the rest of their lives.

  9. I really enjoyed watching this short film because it was moving and it told a true story. When the film clip ended it made me feel happy for the old man .I think it showed you if something bad happens to never give up and be happy.

I think that the director placed the the flashback in the middle of the clip because it made you have lots of questions before. It also made you want to know more about the boys story . But in the end it answered all my questions.

I think the purpose of the still images at the end was to show you what actually happened to Joseph and Helena after there encounter at the orphanage and what happened in real life. Overall it was a great story about a refugee boy that made me really think about what it was like for a refugee.

  10. My opinion? Well honestly I think this short film is very heartwarming and sweet. It made me feel quite emotional and worry a lot but when the end came it was a nice ending.
I honestly think the director put the flash back in the middle to make sense/fit in with the film and to make it more dramatic.
The reason why the director put the pictures at the end of the film was to show what happened to josephs life that wasn’t included in the short clip.
I really enjoyed this clip because it made me feel moved and realize that that not every parent can take care of their children. The pictures at the end help me understand that the girl got married to Joseph and they both built the umbrella shop.

  11. I really enjoyed the umbrella film .I think that the film was very emotional and i love that Joseph had a connection with the umbrella .The best part was at the end when Helena brought Joseph back to the shop it looked like they cared for each other really well.

It made me very curious and still have questions that have not been answered. I like that the flashback was in the middle not the end or start because before the flashback I had loads of questions after the flashback most of them had been answered.

The purpose was to show what happened between Joseph and Helean`s life.

  12. this film was really sad but really fun. The thing that I like is the bit were the boy was crying it made every one nearly cry . It made me feel very sad, upset, feel bad for the
boy. nearly at the end of the film there was a flash back of the boy ruining to his father
in a old man but then it turned it to the little boy . at the end there was a picture that the boy and the girl got married

  13. this short film was well animated and putting the flashback in the middle of the clip really added a dramatic effect to the film.

And the fact that this happens to people is heartbreaking.

the scene that made me most emotional was when he thought he saw his dad and chased after him really hit me in the heart cause I know that feeling when you miss someone so much that you start to hallucinating

in response to the film we created a story board that showed the most important images later on we did a rewrite from josephs perspective

  14. I loved watching this short film because it was an amazing animation. I felt it showed lots of different emotions at the same time. I am very exited till the next time we do this.

  15. I enjoyed this film because it was very moving and it made me feel for the characters. I liked that the characters did not speak because you’d think that it wouldn’t make the film any better but it does. They use their eyebrows and mouths to express their feelings.

This short film made me feel upset because it was about people that are close to each other, separating. For example, Joseph and his father separating from each other.

I think that the director put the flashback in the middle because when you’re watching the beginning, you’re asking questions that you want answered, and then when you watch the middle it answers all of your questions.

I think that the still pictures at the end are there to tell you what happens after the girl gives Joseph her umbrella.

In response to the film, our class created a story board in chronological order to show what the six most important things that happened in Joseph’s life. This is what my work looked like…….

    1. Ah yes Billy D. Delaying the flashback and context makes us curious as to why is the boy stealing the umbrella.

  16. I loved watching this short film. It made me realised how lucky I was. When the film ended it made me emotional . I felt it showed a strong connection between the character and the umbrella by saying it was his father`s and his father left him .

It showed me that some people have to struggle before finding the perfect home.
I think that the director put the flashback in the middle because it tells us why he had such a connection with the umbrella.

I was moved when the girl gave the boy the umbrella

  17. I really liked watching this because it was quite engaging and captured my attention. The film made me feel quite sad for the orphans because they are living without their parents.

When is was the end it really made me happy that the boy got to open a umbrella shop and that he got to see a hallucinations of his father.

The flashbacks were really heart breaking because his father had to leave him at children’s home. I think we should be kind to the children who don’t have parents.

  18. I thought the film was quite emotional and the character in the film showed how important the umbrella was to the boy and it made me feel tearful the images at the end of the film helped me to understand the story a lot.

The middle of the short story was heart braking because we didn’t know that he was a refugee until we saw them laying on the street.

  19. I really liked the film because it made me experience a lot of different feelings. B the end of it, I felt like I understood what had happened to Joseph in the past.

The director put the flashback in the middle because it was a really good time to show why the boy tried to steal the umbrella.

the still images were there because it helps me when I was writing and it made me feel more exited.

  20. I really enjoyed this short film because it made me feel really emotional when the main events took place . It tells a story based on true events (which is very unfortunate). At the end of the story it made me intrigued to know what happens next.

This made me feel as if someone was messing with my feelings because it was an emotional rollercoaster.

  21. this film was really sad but really fun.

  22. I enjoyed this film because it was based on real life experiences and alerted people about real things happening now in the world.

It made me feel sad for Joseph.

To tell us why he wanted the umbrella at a certain time.

To tell you what happened before the old man scene.

  23. As it ended it left us feeling sorry for Joseph because he had to deal with alot when he was younger such as his father being forced to leave him behind and him not having contact with his mother.

The images at the end of the film helped us understand what happened between Hailey and Joseph in the ending and his future (him getting married to Hailey)

  24. I enjoyed watching this short movie very much ! I could feel it was made to make people fill with a million different emotions and one off those people was me . The animation was clear and all my questions were answered so I was not confused at all .

I believe the director put the flashback in the middle of the sequence because she wanted to show people what Joseph went through . It really showed how Joseph experienced loss but kept a smile on his face . They decided to not put the story in chronological order which I think was a great touch to it .

I really thought the small animated pictures before the credit scene were amazing as they showed the bond between Joseph and the girl amazingly well. There were a variety off questions I had about Joseph but the pictures answered all of them .

  25. I personally think this was a really good story! It showed so much emotion yet so much happiness. Not to mention the animation, it was absolutely phenomenal! I think that the main character (Joseph) is very brave for starting a new life even while his dad wasn’t with him.

I really liked the fact that the flashbacks happened in the middle of the story because it helped me to understand what had happened in the character’s life. I think the flashback placed in the middle was a good idea because if it had been placed somewhere else it wouldn’t make much sense.

Also, I think that the pictures really helped!
Thank you for reading my blog!

  26. I personally really enjoyed! it was really short but it showed a really strong point and had so much background. I felt that it shows what some people have to go through and how lucky I am to have my parents around me.

I believe that they were trying to make it more dramatic and we also learn more about his background that is why they put the flashback in the middle of the film. they also could’ve have put the flashback in the middle because he is remembering his depressing child hood.

The ending pictures helped me understand what happed during the gap in the film and who he opened the shop with him and if he had seen the girl again or if they had not became friends .

The ending of the film left me feeling emotional and happy at the same time because he started a new life with his wife selling umbrellas and he will always wonder what his dad is doing.

  27. I enjoyed watching this film because I liked how the characters started off being angry and then got married when they got older. I liked the way that the boy version of Joseph was not bullied for being a refugee boy.

At the end it made me feel happy because he moved on and did not let his life experience stop him from living his life. As he got older, he started a business and had a happy time with Hailey.

  28. I enjoyed the short film because it shows what people have gone though in life how people deal from the past and alerts people of what is happening in the world.

I felt sad for the little boy when his dad left him in front of the children’s home all alone and I felt very upset because it made a strong connection between the father and the boy.

The director put the flashback here because it shows the connection between the past and present or to show why the boy wanted the umbrella.

The images show what happened in between when the old man was a child and when he was old.

  29. In response to the film I wrote a narrative as older Joseph about his life.

    Here it is

    1. Thank you for sharing Billy. It’s wonderful to see how the film inspired you to write an account.

  30. The narrative of the story was great

I enjoyed the flashbacks and all the animations and editing 🙂

  31. I really loved watching this film because it was very eye catching and made me have lots of different emotions.

When the film ended I really wanted to cry because the old man/Joseph created a new life for himself and his wife

  32. I enjoyed watching this short clip because lots of people can relate to this story and know that they are not alone. I felt that it showed a strong connection between the character and the umbrella by allowing the character to get married and have something that reminds of his father.

As it ended, it left me feeling really emotional but also happy for Joseph because he was able to make a better life for himself.
The director placed the flashback in the middle because he may hope that it explains why he stole the umbrella and how he’s here.

The images at the end of the clip helps me to understand who he’s with and what feat he made. The purpose of still images are because it explains what happens next…

  33. I enjoyed watching this short film because it captures all the emotions and feels like u are inside.Like when he told the story it was really strong and wanted to tell that people go though this and it is real life.

The director placed the flashback in the middle because he wanted them to be curious and want to figure out what happened. It helps understand the characters context and why he wants the umbrella,it impacts the audience and a build of emotions.

    +

    1. Thank you Maia. Yes the flashback does provide context. Did you consider how the film might be different if the narrative order was altered?

  34. I enjoyed watching this short film because it was about a refugee that ended up in good care home, and he didn’t give up.
I also liked this film because it was a mixture of different emotions .It made me feel sad and disappointed.
I think the writer put the flashback in the middle because it answered most of the viewers questions and wanted them to read on.
The images at the end of the film helped me to understand what happened after Joseph was out of the orphanage and what he had and was doing.

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Emelia and explaining how the images supported your reading.

  35. In response to the film, we created a storyboard that showed 6 scenes of Joseph’s life. in our class we completed a storyboard and followed by that we did a write up in the role of Joseph. Here is my example of the story board.

  36. In response to the film, me and my class created a storyboard that shows 6 important stages in Joseph’s life. Soon after, we wrote a piece of writing from joseph’s perspective in first person.

Here is a picture of my writing!

  37. I enjoyed watching this short film because it was moving and made me feel sad and then made me feel happy. As it ended, it made me think about the difficult situation he was in. It made me think about the orphans and the refugees and how their life went.

I think the director placed the flashback in the middle because she didn’t want to give the clues or the information away. I think the flashback helped me to under the boy people like it because joseph are in and what we need to do somethin about it

i felt very happy to the end at the start i felt sad and at the modal i felt exsited
in response to the film i rot a narrative about his and haw it was tooth

joshes crated a new life to himself and his father

    1. Yes the film does take us through a range of emotions Jamie. Thank you for sharing how it influenced you.

  38. The umbrella movie was an emotional rollercoaster for me. I loved it since it captured the character’s emotions perfectly. It told the story of a young refugee boy who experienced many difficulties but overcame this by creating a life for himself with a loving wife and a successful business. This short heart warming film left me feeling grateful that I have my parents and a roof over my head.

I believe the director made the flash back to give you context about the young boy and to make the audience speculate about the boy.

  39. I think the director put the flashback in the middle, because it creates more affect and tension. Also, the boy might have been telling the story of why he wanted the umbrella so much, because it reminded him of his dad.

  40. The flashback would be better in the middle of the story because it give more emotion and character.

  41. It made me feel like I am really privileged and how all he wanted was an umbrella. I think that the flashback is definitely better in the middle as it answers a big question about why he wanted an umbrella. I might include a POV of his dad after he dropped him off at the orphanage. To tell you about the rest of his life with the girl.

  42. This Poem made me feel quite confused at first but as it went on i understood it more.I think they put a flashback there because if you were quite confused why the boy wanted the umbrella they showed the flashback so you would understand. I think they should include what country they originally from so we would understand how they come to the country

  43. In the beginning, I felt curious because I had no idea why the boy was excited when the girl came and then when the flashback happened, I realised why the boy wanted the umbrella. In the end I felt happy for the boy, because he got the only thing to remind him of his dad.
I think the purpose of the still pictures is to tell the person who’s watching what happened after his childhood, but before he gets old.

  44. How the film made you feel. Why did it make you feel that way?
It made me feel confused because it was difficult to follow the story.

Why did the creator put the flashback in that position?
Because it was showing what was in the photo in an animated way.

    🙂

  45. At the start of the film i felt quite sad and upset especially seeing the boy upset at the window and how the girl snatched the umbrella off of him, but i felt quite intrigued and excited about what actually happened in the boys past. I also think that the creator put flashbacks instead of explaining at the start is because if they explained at the start, it would of been boring, but the flashbacks make it more suspenseful and intriguing for me.

  46. How did the film make me feel?
The film made me feel confused because it was difficult to follow the story

Why did the creator put the flashback in that position?
I think that the creator put the flashback in that position because it was showing why the child stole the umbrella

  47. It was quite moving because I never thought that he was a refugee and the way the girl just changed her mind was quite nice. I didn’t think that was going to happen. I think there should be another flashback why they left their country.

  48. The part of the film when the boy’s dad had to leave him behind was quite a sad and heart-felt moment because leaving your parents behind can be quite emotional.

I think the still images at the end was also quite a good addition to the film because it tells you what happens during their lives that isn’t shown during the film.

  49. The film was quite sad because of the flashbacks which were really emotional for some people. I would include a flashback of how they were doing in their country before they left.

  50. the first part to 3 min 25 seconds i didn’t have any emotions but towards the end i had emotions because i think it was sad how the boys father had to leave him and it was sad how they had to leave because they became poor and the dad had to leave the boy and he only had the scarf left and he took the umbrella because it looked the same as his dad and it gave him memories

  51. It made me feel quite curious at the start because they were sad and I didn’t know why they were feeling that emotion.Gradually, I did feel sad because of the flashback scene and the relationship between the the boy and the father.I loved how the creator put the flashback in that position so we knew why the umbrella was so important to him.I enjoyed seeing the pictures at the end because after the part where he sells the umbrella it shows how they ended up together.

  52. In the begging, I felt scared because of the umbrella missing . Next, felt qiuet mad when I notice about the boy that took. Then I felt emotoal when the boy sad about all of the memories. Finally I felt happy that the boy gave the umbrella.

  53. The film made me feel lots of different emotions. at the start of the film i felt sad because both , the boy and the girls feelings were reflecting onto me.when he had the flashbacks it made me feel even more upset because the boy had no idea were his father was. At the end it was a very happy ending and the old man seemed to be happy with his life and wife. I think the flashbacks were put there to add suspense and make peoples feelings deeper because of the way they added in the flashbacks. I would add in a flashback of what actually happened to the dad rather than making people think and not know. The son still wouldn’t k ow what happened to his father though. The images explained the film in a story board which i thought was a nice touch because it explained the in betweens of the story that weren’t filmed for the story

  54. i didnt have any emotions to the start to 3min 25 seconds but i did until the end beacuse the flash back was very sad for me how they had to leave and his dad had to put him to a orphan

  55. It made me feel a mix of emotions during different scenes. I felt upset for the boy because he was a refugee and didn’t have as much food, shelter or education as you and me. The girl acted as she didn’t want to donate her toys but once she saw the children playing with them she felt glad she had donated them.

  56. I liked it as It made me feel sad but at the same time it made me feel very interested. I think that the still images at the end were meant to summarize the whole text

  57. The film made me feel quite sympathetic for the boy because all he really wanted was to see his dad again and the umbrella is the closest he got to meeting his dad. I also really like the way the flashback was put in because it explains why the boy really wanted the umbrella.

  58. The film made me feel a bit emotional because the boy that took the umbrella hid it in the cupboard so no one knew but then the girl found out and took it back. Then the adult saw the picture and the boy told them what happened and why he took it, which made me feel emotional. The flashback I would include is why they were struggling.

  59. I felt a mix of feelings during this film especially in the flashback when it explained why he wanted the umbrella so badly as it reminds him of his father. I would also add a flashback explaining why they left/what happened in their home country.

  60. The film made me upset and sad because no one should feel like that and he had a traumatic childhood. I think the creator put the flashback in the certain place because it added a lot of emotion to the text. I think the images at the end of the text helps to fill in the story because as you could see he changes from a boy to a old man so it fills in the gaps.

  62. It showed me how many people suffer as a refuge even in such developed countries like England

Even we are more diverse countries so many families depend on food banks
and made me feel like even though the world is a better than it used to be there are still things that we need to work on to make the world a more diverse and better place than it used to be. The flashback creates more meaning to the story and gives the readers a peak into the real world.

  63. i felt sympathetic because i can’t feel empathy for something i haven’t experienced.
i think the flash back was placed where it was so the watcher could understand the context of why he simply wanted the yellow umbrella. If i were to add a flash back i would add a flash back of the boy and his dad before they were refugees (i would most prefer it in claymation.) i think the reason for the claymation stages were to show why he missed his dad, who he was and why he left.

  64. In the beginning it was a bit confusing as i didn’t know why the boy wanted the umbrella but after the flashback i understood why and it was a bit emotional but where was the mother?

  65. The movie made me feel sorry for the boy because his dad had to leave him at an orphanage so he could have a better life. I think the creator put the flashback where they put it because it adds to the emotion and mystery of why he wanted the yellow umbrella. I would have included memories of his mother because it shows nothing about her. I think the purpose of the still images at the end were showing what happened in the period of time between his childhood and adulthood.

  66. The film made me feel sorry for the boy. The sombre music and crying and tragic events made me feel that way. The flashbacks were put at that time to build an atmosphere of mystery on why the boy was so intrigued with the umbrella.I would put a flashback on what happened to the mum so the reader can understand more about the boys background history. They put the still images to show hat happened during that transition of him becoming old.

  68. I think you could include a flashback about how the girl got the umbrella and why it was important to her because it seemed like she wanted the umbrella and didn’t like the boy taking it from the stand

  69. it was very emotional but it left me thinking about where his mother was. did she die in whatever they were fleeing from. did she die of starvation. did she die of dehydration. did she die of an illness. did she die of bombs from the war at least i think it was a war. it really emotionally touched me when the father kissed the child’s forehead and left him in front of the orphanage. when it spiralled into the flashbacks it really looked like claymation i’m not sure if that is true or not but if it is it was really touching. in the flashbacks it showed how hard it is for most refugees and how far they have to travel to get to somewhere where they feel safe.in the end i felt sad for the child because he never found his dad and his mind was playing tricks on him which made him think that his father was there when he actually wasn’t. But then he saw that woman and i think they were already together because at the end it showed pictures of them both when they were middle aged so that is why i think they were already in a relationship. i was confused because when i first watched it i felt that they met there but then after watching the pictures at the end i realised that wasn’t the first time that they had met overall it was really touching and i had loads of sympathy for the child.

  70. The flashback was put in the middle to make it more mysterious and interesting to see what happens, whereas if you put it in the start of the film then you will know why the boy is depressed

  71. The film made me feel a little emotional especially when the boy started crying and had the flashback. I think he put the flashback in where it was to tell his story/ memories without any of the characters saying anything. I would include a flashback of how he lost his mother as she was not with them on the boat. I think the purpose of the still images were to fill in the spaces of the transition from the blonde girl giving the boy the umbrella to the boy as an elderly.

  72. It is very sad, but also eye-opening as it really makes you think about other people and how hard some peoples lives are, especially refugees as the book is about one.

I think the creator chose that position for the flashback as it builds some sort of tension in the beginning, when you don’t know why the boy is sad and why he took the umbrella. It also makes the person watching feel a sad emotion and makes them feel sorry for the boy.

If i were to add another flashback, I would probably include one of the reason they evacuated their country ( a war, or other serious reason )

The still images were to show the boys life between the scene where the girl gives him the umbrella, and he gives the umbrella to another girl when he is old. This is important as it also makes what could of been a 30 minute movie, a seven minute one.

  73. The film made me feel lots of different emotions as it portrayed different feelings at different points in the film. I think the creator but the flashback were it is to show us why the boy wanted the umbrella so much and how ended up in the children’s home. I think the still images at the end were really helpful since they told us more about the boy and the girl’s life.

  74. The film was very sad because his dad died by a thunder storm or something like that and the boy was very lonley and the only thing he had was a yellow umbrella to remind him of his dad which was very depressing.

  75. At first, I was confused because the start was very sudden and it didn’t really make any sense to me. But later, I understood more and I like how they did a flashback.

  76. It was kinda sad because he was refuge that came from a different country and doesn’t speak the language and he doesn’t have any friends and he also not with his father which is important part of your life as a kid. He put the flash back so he could explain to the little girl, the mum and caretaker about the journey of the umbrella

  77. At the start I felt a bit confused as I didn’t know what was going on. Then, throughout the rest of the film I felt a bit sad and emotional because we saw that the boy just missed his dad and the umbrella reminded him of his dad.
I think the flashback helped me get a better understanding of the boy’s story and what his feelings were.

  78. I found the film interesting because I saw other people’s perspectives. The creator put the flashback in that position because people know his dad had that umbrella. i would put a flashback of him and his dad in there country. and the still images represent his life with the girl.

  79. Emotional because there was a scene where the boy was crying because the umbrella to remind him of his dad.

  80. Throughout the film i had many different emotions. I think the creator used the flashback how they are to show that the boy has no clue where his dad is. If i would include anything to the flashback it would probably be to create more suspense and make it a little more deeper and upsetting .

  81. the film was interesting as i was seeing others perspectives . The creator put the flashback in that position to let people know that was his dads umbrella. to represent his life with the girl

  82. It made me feel overwhelmingly sad. especially when we delved into his memories. And at other points when he was at the window ( at the beginning ) and when the girl took the umbrella of him. ( At that point I thought that he was going to get kicked out of the orphanage )

The creator put the flashback in that position because it keeps you wanting to watch more ( to find out why he is in the orphanage ) and to give it a back story.

I would include a flashback of why he was fleeing . ( Just because I think quite a lot of people want to know.

I think it was good to include the images to fill in the gap between him receiving the umbrella ( as a child ) and him owning a shop ( as an elderly )

  83. I think it is good because it shows how it’s like to be a migrant and what happens to the children and how we can treat people properly, I also think of what happened to the mum as she is nowhere in the flashback, so it has a bit of lore in the short film.
