  1. Canonbury are just starting our work on this painting- we have already writing some great dialogues between the people in the picture and using correct speech punctuation!

  2. With the Canal In Winter I think it is bad that all the rich can have fun but the poor can’t because the are all equal but because they a poor they are made to be slaves which is very bad. But in this day and age I am glad to say that that isn’t happening now.

  3. I like how he drew the people because he showed the characters emotions by using colours. The man with the sledge might be asking for help.

  4. We liked the detail of the people’s clothes. We also liked the colours that mixes with the browns and greys! The third thing is that they might be talking about how fun the canals are when they freeze. The last thing we liked about the painting is that the sky looked very cloudy and grey because the ice was there.

  5. We thought it was interesting that you could tell which people were rich and which were were poor. You can see people in the background playing ice hokey and people fishing to get food because all the boats are stuck under the ice. We think the rich people might have been talking about getting the sleigh started and bossing the slaves around!

  6. I think that it’s very interesting the way that he used darker colours near the front and lighter colours towards the back. I think the poor people would have been talking about how cold it is – but some of them were having a lot of fun playing ice-hockey and having fun on the ice.

  7. I Loved learning about :A canal in winter.
The foreground was miserable and gloomy. The background was bright and joyful.
In art we learned and tried drawing using :Ariel perspective.

  8. The colours in the Canal in winter changes the mood and the feelings. In the foreground the colours are quite dark and in the background it is quite misty and bright.I feel bad for the poor people because the rich people have rich and expensive horses and clothes. While the rich people are bossing their workers around.

  9. We really liked the colours in this picture, i liked how the artist made the mood using paint, he made it look a bit depressing!

  10. I really enjoyed looking at the painting. I liked to look at the children havng the fun on the ice.

  11. I really enjoyed looking at this painting and i really liked how the artist has used perspective and sombre golden brown tones.I really liked how the mood changed with brighter and darker colours. We also thought about what they were saying and i really enjoyed working on this painting.

    1. Thank you Hudson and Max. Yes perspective is important in the painting. Can you explain more?

      1. With perspective the further away things are they become paler and brighter and the closer the objects are they are they are darker in paintings.

  12. I like this painting because the details are amazing. The canal might not be a canal it might be a tributary.Did you notice in the background there is lots of people skating on the thick ice. The foreground is very dark and gloomy .

  13. I liked this painting because it has different moods. One mood is gloomy which has been made by putting dark colours and the people hunching up makes me feel cold. There is a side which is painted in light colours which makes me feel happy. There are people playing ice-hockey and skating around.

  14. I like that the lighter colours make happy and excited moods and darker colours make gloomy anddepressed mood.

  15. HI I think the background looks more happier and more fun and brighter and there is more people. also the foreground is more darker and more sad even the ice and the people.

  16. I really enjoyed looking at the painting. I liked to look at the children having the fun on the ice.

  17. The children are noticing so many interesting details in the paintings and linking it to their learning about rivers and history topics too. It has helped a lot of us expand our vocabulary and we thought we would copy the trick of using colours to suggest a mood by describing the colours in our writing- it works really well!
We are really enjoying this project and can not wait to see the real paintings in a few weeks time!

  18. Very interesting to see how you have noticed the way ‘mood’ can be shown in writing as well as drawing. We agree that this painting is brilliant for showing how colour and pose can be used to change the mood. (Music can be used too to create mood!)
Some lovely writing and art, thank you!
