      1. I like United Way because the message is positive and that through out everything if we stick together we can get through the toughest of things.

  1. I like the United way poem because it relates to the corona virus crisis.People are struggling to work and earn money for their family and they have to work together.

  2. We liked the poem by Amanda Gorman called UNITED WAY because you shouldn’t think that you are alone , somebody is besides you at all times!

  3. I liked the poem because it was really inspiring and and showed us not to give up in hard time
the poem was really emotinal and i feel like Amanda Gorman wrote that poem to let people know your not alone and not the only one who is suffering right now

  4. I liked Michael Rose, because he has detail and actions and also he doesn’t rhyme but he is funny because it always does not have to rhyme.

  5. Today we have been learning about Amanda Gorman. We learnt that she was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate and she went to one of the most prestigious secondary schools in America. We also learnt that she works on issues of oppression, feminism, race and marginalization. The lesson was very fun and interesting and we enjoyed learning about her.

  6. Today we’ve been reading one of Amanda Gorman’s poems called United Way. We have been discussing and evaluating her use of language and performance and answering questions about what we like about her poem and what we like about her performance. We also wrote our favourite lines and why we like them.

  7. I adore the line ” To be hope-sighted” because it’s a word I’d never actually heard before and I like how it would inspire people to be positive and optimistic.

  8. I really like Amanda Gorman’s poem United Way because it reminds me of Covid 19 and how hard it is to cope with it and we all have to work together to deal with it. It is exactly what United Way is about.

  9. I like the phrase “for when we live to give, we always live united” because for example we live to give back.

I like the phrase “its hard to hope, hard to cope with crisis” because for example it can be hard to look on the bright side when everything is going so wrong, like during the pandemic when we were stuck at home and couldn’t see our friends. This poem helped remind us we need to be hope-sighted at these times.

      1. i think its relevant in our lives today michael its like to fight powerful words to fight covid 19

  10. I like the “It’s hard to hope hard to cope” line and the “To be hope-sighted, never divided” as using hope-sighted instead of optimistic makes it sound better and the poem as a good impression of how we should work together even in tough times but my favorite line is “We mend, we don’t break even when we bend” shows you if something bad happens don’t let it affect you and just fix it.

  11. I realy like this poem it has a strong messege and its very strong and i love it when she says “another mum pays her bills and another child eats his fill”.Shes an roll model to me and i realy enjoy reading this poem.

  12. I really liked the way in her poem ‘United Way’ Amanda Gorman sent out a very important message that we are all stronger together/united . I really enjoyed reading it with my class it made us more united to hear this fantastic poem outloud and in our heads . It has inspired me read and write poems . The first time I had heard about her was at Joe Bidens Inaugaration she was a very bold and confident person . I like her and her poems.

  13. The St Aloysius’ Y7 Poetry Club loved reading ‘United Way’ and learning about Amanda Gorman who we recognised instantly from Biden’s inauguration, We enjoyed discussing our ideas about the poem and what we believe to be the main message in the poem.

  14. I enjoyed this poem as it gave me a sense of inspiration. The language used was quite encouraging as well.

  15. This poem is inspiring because it talkes about how life is hard and that you should never give up. It also use good language like metaphors. I think it was written around 1950 because Hughes was born 1902. It gives advice of what to do in life to kids so they grow up to have a good life.

  16. I think it is a good poem because a mother explains to her son about her difficult life. When it says it’s had stacks in it ,and spliters’and boards torn up that shes come from a long way.

  17. i liked the poem because it said to keep on going in life and life will never be easy like a crystal stair which is a metaphor instead he said his life was hard to climb or go through as he said “it had tacks in it and splinters and the boards were torn up”

  18. Mother to son: I really like the way its set because it talks how life isn’t easy and that you never know whats coming;and that just because someone has a good, nice and rich life dosent mean you will to and the author tells her son that life isn’t alway a calm stream.

  19. our thoughts on ‘mother to son’ are that we like the way that the author uses a metaphoric staircase with like splinters, tacks and torn carpet to describe their tough life and how it tells you to never give up and belive in youself even when life gets tough you just keep going .

  20. i liked the fact that they consider life is hard i would describe mine as a car running into a moose. I also think that those tacs and splinters

  21. I really liked it because the mother tries to motivate the son to achieve his goal and to never give up.

  22. I like this poem becuase it showed me to never give up and to keep on trying and i likedit when the speaker was telling people about his life.

  23. I liked this poem because it reminded me to be resilient and keep going even when I don’t believe in myself. Almost everyone in the class thought that the reciting the poem was a man and were very surprised when they found out it was called mother and son.

  24. I like this poem because it has shown others how hard life could be for people. I like the line that says “life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I think the author means that life is easy when it’s not.

  25. I liked the poem because it is inspirational and it was interesting. life was had for her back then and to not make the same mistake and not give up.

  26. I liked this poem, as it made me think about how the most succsessful people have gone through the hardest of times, and how i can do it too.

  27. What i liked about this poem, is that the mother in this poem is trying to motivate her son to keep going and to never give up, as the mother had a hard life but had never gave up. When i first read this poem, i thought that the parent motivating the son was the son’s father, but then i had found out that the parent was a female and was the boys mother which had slightly shocked me as i thought the parent was a male.

  28. I liked the poem it taught me to stay positive and there is always challenges in life but thats apart of life.

  29. I like united way because it is very rich of vocabulary + it has emotive sentences that explain it well.

  30. still i rise:

I like how this poem because it is very deep my faviroute is how she says “you may shoot me with your words” witch means you may hurt mev with your words but i will still be brave a bounce back.

it is a very deep in feeling poem an i love how she is very deep on how she feels.

  31. it is telling people to care about others and that we should look after everyone around us. I really enjoyed reading this poem. Unidted Way.

  32. United Way: I like that the message is uplifting and teaches us to be optimistic even through hard times. One line that inspires me is ‘Fighting for every person in the neighbourhood’ because it means do not be selfish and stand up for other people.

  33. I loved United Way because it was powerful, it says that we should look after each other and that we should stick together

  34. United Way: I like this poem because the message it gives is powerful and encouraging .I enjoyed the line “For when we live to give, we will always live united” as it shows that when you give to others and care for them you will have a strong community that you can trust.

  35. It was a very inspirational poem and it was relevant to the pandemic. The language used was interesting and made you think about the meaning of the poem

  36. I really enjoyed the poem and it was very inspirational because there’s some specific lines that really stood out and made it great to read.

  37. Where I’m From by Kwame Alexander: I think that as the poem says ‘don’t say you can’t until you try’ the author comes from a place where life isn’t easy. Also as there was only one bathroom in the house, they weren’t wealthy. They also covered their sofa in plastic maybe because it was one of the most expensive things they had and wanted to keep it in good condition.

  38. Where I’m From by Kwame Alexander:
I liked this poem because of how positive Kwame’s thoughts were.I also liked how well he explained small details of his life such as the days of the week and other specific
dates”from Sunday fried chicken and chocolate birthday cakes”.

  39. Where I’m from by Kwame Alexander: Kwame Alexander is from America and he is a very famous poem writer. He was very grateful even though he wasn’t very wealthy. This poem is about his life and background.

  40. Where I’m From by Kwame Alexander

We learnt that he lived in a small house, and had to share a bathroom, but his family were still motivational. He came from a family that said “Don’t you say you can’t ’till you try.” I also know that even though they bought shoes from a second hand shop they still made them look shiny and new.

  41. Today we read where Im from by Kwame Alexander. It said that you should never say you cant until you try. In his backround i think he was poor because he lived in a tiny pink house. I also like his poem called the undefeated because in his performance he emphasied a lot of words and changed his speed throughout the book.

  42. Where i’m from: I like this poem because it showes what someones life was like. From the poem I could infer that he was quite poor and that he grew up in a 1 bathroom house and sofa with plastic coveres.

  43. Where I’m from by Kwame Alexander: I like this poem because it talks about having a porr family with not allot of money and a house with shared house and a shared bathroom and it talks about havng a postive and a negative side the sofas were covered in plastic so they dont get dirty quick.
This can help a reader focuses on the description
THis person comes from a home wich is very encouring of their children to stay determind

  44. Where I’m From by Kwame Alexander :

I really like this poem because it made me think about how different families and different people live.I also liked the first stanza because it showed how they grew up.I liked when the poem said plastic covered sofa in tiny pink houses since it made me think of a very big , encouraging family.

  45. Where i’m from poems help us to educate the readers about them. I like the poem because it’s unique in a way. I like the undefeated because he controlled his pace and projected his voice. He also emphasised the words that needed it.

  46. Where I’m From: I really like this poem because it describes the life of the author. It can inspire a young poet to create a poem that would change the world. I also like how it is brief but also quite deep at the same time. My favorite line would be ‘from don’t say you can’t till you try.’

  47. I like the poem “where i’m from” because the way they use the language they use is very descriptive because it creates an image in the readers mind. The poem made me feel inspired. H

  48. I really love the “United Way” poem because of its powerful words and language choices. I really like it when it says “Fighting for every person in the neighbourhood” because it is saying to stand up for each other. The poem also says “To be hope-sighted,never divided” which means to think positive and stick together. I find that really inspirational!!!

  49. Dear future generations
    Sorry,sorry,sorry
    I hope you forgive us
We didn’t know what we had until it was gone
    For example,
    Trees
    We burned them down
    Cut them with brutal machines
    Why?
    Greed.

This is my black out poem.

  50. Dear us,

    Sorry. We made excuses
    The earth. Gone.
For you believe there were billions of trees.
    We are creating pollution, carbon.
    Diseases.
    I am sorry.

  51. Future Generations when I say sorry I hope you fogive us we didn’t know what we had for example I’m guessing believe it or not the amazon rain forest there were billions of trees gorgeous oh you don’t know much about trees do you ? well let me tell you that trees are amazing we literally breath the air they are creating, and they clean up our pollution we cut them down with brutal machines at a rate of 40 football feilds every minute thats 50% of all the trees in the last few 100 years why? for this and that would make me so sad
pictures of leaves on it when I was a child I read how native americans had so much consideration they felt responsibl for how they left the land for the next 7 generations I am sorry we used nature as a credit card over drafting animals to the edge of extinction stealing your chance to ever see the uniqueness sorry we poisond the oceans so much that you can’t even swim in them. Im sorry about our mindset we had the nerve to call this destruction progress.

  52. I like the poem Where I’m from by Kwame Alexander because it has an impact on the reader by making it not make complete sense so that it makes the reader think more about the poem and what the real meaning behind it is.

  53. Well dear classmates,
    I’ll tell you,
    I live in a tree,
    Where there is wood,
    Life has been painful,
    Earth has been destroyed,
    (Apart from my tree!)

    I am from love,
    I am from art,
    Help the earth,
    Save the earth,
Don’t throw plastic in the ocean,
    Animals could die,
    For we…
    Take care of the earth.

  54. i would rather live on the poor live because i dont get beheaded because they will cut you head of and you will be executed.and i will rather kill myself because my head will get cut of and because because i will not live on the north side because get bheade

  55. i think that watching migrants was really fun and that it is showing we need to help stop climate change and racism
