Writing Through Art has been an amazing experience, both for my class and myself.
It was an amazing way of engaging the children with art works that they otherwise wouldn’t access and has positively impacted the whole classes cultural capital.
Thanks for all the work you put in, Michael and we (Hargrave Park) would definitely like to do it again next year.
I know that Greg has already emailed, but I just wanted to reiterate the value we found in the Writing through Art programme. The project gave the children the opportunity to study and then see artwork across a variety of different subjects which really fired their imagination. They had the opportunity to produce extended writing pieces which is essential for their development in literacy and to also learn some history through the paintings.
The warm welcome we received at Kenwood was fantastic and the children had the opportunity to explore the house and grounds where the idyllic setting proved to be an inspiration for them all. In fact, it also inspired me to visit the house the next weekend, something I have only done on a couple of occasions before, despite living in Crouch End for years!
Many of the children’s favourite painting was that of John Joseph Merlin, due to his colourful life and seemingly eccentric personality. The Guitar Player was also popular, with the children really appreciating the colour palette and they enjoyed comparing two of Vermeer’s paintings.
However, they were also interested in discussing the lives of the people living on the bridge over London and also Lady Tollemache as Miranda; particularly the connection to Shakespeare as we have studied two of his plays this year. In addition, I had many comments about other paintings they saw during their visit including the Landseer ‘Hawk’ painting, which I believe you used in a previous year of the project).
The children really loved taking part in Writing Through Art and were excited every week to read the comments made by yourself and children from other schools.
The children have written feedback on the blog. I tried to get them to add them to the ‘evaluations’ but there was no where for them to write so they added them to the last painting studied.
My feedback:
Writing Through Art helped children from all abilities to share ideas without feeling judged by others, I think it helped the class to be really open minded and think outside the box!

Hello Michael,
The children really loved taking part in Writing Through Art and were excited every week to read the comments made by yourself and children from other schools.
The children have written feedback on the blog. I tried to get them to add them to the ‘evaluations’ but there was no where for them to write so they added them to the last painting studied.

Thanks very much,
