I can’t believe this was drawn in 1603 by Isack van Ostade.

The painting is so fascinating and I love it.It should be so cold when you can experience this.
It looks like kids are working and there were houses so I think some people lived there too.
Kids had to work and it was really cold
i think it was fascinating because when my teacher said it was cold I shivered and I thought it was winter. but it was spring.
It is so sad living there.

it would be really diffucult to work of all of this coldness

I love learning about Frost Fairs they are soooooo fascinating especially ones in canals they don’t come often you know!
I don’t know how elephants could walk on top of the ice at the Frost Fair!

I could not imagine elephants walking across a frozen lake.
Yes, it’s hard to imagine. The ice was once so thick on the river Thames elephants walked on the river in London.
The canal in the winter looked really cold. I don’t know how people could be able to go out in that cold wind. But where is the canal? It looks really realistic .
it was so cold i couldnt describe it
I like the neutral colours because it makes it look delicate making the overall painting stand out.
It must be hard to paint it and he must be tired after that I would love to pain something like that.

It was painted in 1645 Fatima. Over 300 years ago.
I like the peom because it rhymes and when did the artist do this?
The painting looks so fascinating with all the detail and looking how cold it is! And also it looks so old-fashioned! I love it. Sara A

That’s an interesting question Madina. Perhaps you could ask when you visit Kenwood?
like a day or 2
I agree even when we were talking abowt it it was realy cold
The picture is so cold
The picture is so cold I could get frostbite
By looking at this painting it creates a lovely, calm and happy mood.
In the background you can see the sky that creates a relaxing mood that everyone will love to see and will think about the painting every day that they would love to live in.
Thank you Kaitlynn for explaining the mood created in the painting.
It’s a sad dull old dust mood and it’s winter and the lake is frozen but there’s no snow falling from the air so that must mean there wearing layers because it is really breezy and cold but it cannot be less that -2 degrees in the scene of this painting
Thank you Taybah. I like how you identify the mood.
it looks so cold even looking at it
It must be really breeze because if it’s not snowing and everyone is wearing layer and the lake is frozen it must be a harsh blow of coldness.
imagan living there without shelter it would be realy diffucult
how would people live there it is kind of not a realaxing place to live
Yes their lives would be challenging.
i cant describe it in my own words that i cant say a single thing out
the one thing i love abowt it.Ti how the way that its setting
In this painting it is so cold it feels like you are in it. Also whenever I look at this painting in class whilst it is on display I always wonder how often did the canal freeze? How long did it take to freeze? And was there colours in it the most people don’t use today?
Interesting questions Asmaa. There is something about the painting that draws us in.
