  1. I have really enjoyed being involved in the Writing Through Art project. The paintings the children got to write about were amazing and the writing tasks which were provided each week offered great variety for children to expand on their writing skills. I know the highlight for the children was the visit to Kenwood House last week. The children and the rest of the adults were so impressed with how beautiful the building and the gardens were. Blessed with bright sunny weather, it really made the trip one to remember!

  2. This project has been fantastic. The children have really enjoyed the different writing tasks and they loved viewing the original paintings at Kenwood House. It was a pleasure to hear them talk so eloquently about the images during the visit and highlighted just how much they had learnt about art history and how to discuss the different artists’ work. I would definitely recommend this project to others as the children truely get so much out of it.

  3. Thank you Michael (and Kenwood House!) for providing an extremely worthwhile and inspiring project for our pupils. I have been aware of other teachers involvement in this project over the past few years, but by being involved first hand as the year four teacher, I have experienced how much impact it can have on the children’s creativity. My class absolutely loved each week of the project and didn’t want it to end! Visiting Kenwood and seeing the pictures they had studied first hand was a real highlight for the children. It was great to see some of our parents at the open morning today and I personally enjoyed being taken on a tour of the paintings by a group of my year four students along with their parents – Brilliant! Well done to all the schools for the amazing group artwork pieces … every school managed to have a different take on the pictures that inspired the work.
One of the key learning points is that the children have learnt how to ‘read’ paintings – a skill they will hopefully take with them into adulthood and in galleries all over the world!

  4. The Kenwood House project was a fantastic success! The children loved learning about the different paintings (especially Mrs Tollemache) and this was reflected in the quality of the written outcomes. It was very useful for me to go to Kenwood House on the teacher tour to find out about the paintings before we studied them. It allowed me to deliver the content in a fun and interesting way for the children. Taking the children to Kenwood House was the highlight of the project. While the children were writing their comments for the end of year reports, they all commented on the Kenwood House project as one of their favourite things this year.

On a personal note, thanks for all your hard work organising the project.

  5. The writing through art was an excellent experience for my class. They responded very well to having a stimulus to get their ideas flowing before being given the correct information. Alot of my children had commented on how happy they were that their ideas and predictions were valued even if they were not correct.
The children created some amazing pieces of writing which they are all very proud of and have shared every painting with their adults at home.

Thank you very much for giving me this teaching opportunity.

  6. My class thoroughly enjoyed the Writing through Art project this year. The paintings inspired excellent discussion and provided a varied and interesting focus for writing tasks. All children were genuinely enthused by the artwork and loved finding out the stories behind them. In addition, the possibility of getting their work posted on the blog ensured that they made a special effort with their writing. Most of my class listed it in their end of year report comments as the best thing they had done all year in Literacy! Thank you Michael and the staff at Kenwood house for providing such a special and memorable experience.

  7. Writing Through Art is an excellent course which engages both boys and girls through the different paintings and activities. Different writing genres were covered which meant that those who struggle with writing excelled in other areas such as creating a storyboard and poster. The only issue we had was the blog where some children said their comments were never posted on the blog and if all children wanted to post at the same time it wouldn’t work. Overall the children enjoyed it and were fascinated when we went to Kenwood House and they were able to see the paintings in real life.

    Many thanks,
