  1. Shakespeare Class at Duncombe really enjoyed our first painting and all the discussion about what the different parts of the image might mean.

Here is Jonathan’s letter to Van Dyke. I really like the way he has thought about each element of the painting and used them to structure his letter. Do you agree with what he thinks about Princess Henrietta?

    1. King Class have read your letter and we are very impressed with your use of adjectives. We are very impressed by how observant you were of the painting, you did not miss any details. Finally you really achieved the informal writing style.

      WELL DONE JONATHON!!!

    2. Jonathon, In class we read your work out and we all established that you have used brilliant adjectives. You have told Anthony Van Dyck clearly why you like the painting while also telling him how he could improve it.

      WELL DONE!!!!!!

  2. Here’s the letter Harvey wrote about Van Dyke’s painting. I was really impressed with some of the wonderful language he used to describe the princess. Which is your favourite adjective in Harvey’s letter?

  3. Here’s Kestia’s letter to Van Dyck. I’m especially impressed with the questions she asked. What do you think some of Van Dyck’s answers would be?

    Dear Van Dyck,
I have seen your amazing painting of Lady Henrietta of Lorraine. I saw it at The National Gallery, it was impressive. I like the design of Henrietta’s dress I also like the colour of the dress, but I want you to add in some improvements. I would like if there was no big gap in her dress. I am not sure if Henrietta likes the dress or not, she doesn’t look confused because she might like it but on her face is doesn’t look like she does but she might. I have just realised that Henrietta has a dagger in her dress .The dagger is really small but it makes it look like she is going to kill the boy and maybe act like she is normal when she might not be. If the king was there .What would what the picture look like? Would it be better? Would the king look angry at Henrietta? Would she have to apologise to the king?
    I have a question
What would it feel like if you were in disguise and the king saw you how would you feel and explain?
I liked the pictures but can you make some changes because if some people find the the dagger and start freaking out. Can you please make a new picture put the same people but change it so the people who go to The National Gallery and really like the picture so the might buy or make it famous if the are important people.
    You’re sincerely,
    Kestia

  4. Here is the letter to Van Dyck we wrote as a class. Most children agreed that Princess Henrietta’s dress could have been more colourful to make her stand out more, but the fact that the page’s eyes direct your gaze to her is also effective.

    Dear Van Dyck,
I saw your painting a week ago and I adore it. It has exceeded my expectations. The colours stand out, especially the page’s bright red clothes, and it was the first thing I noticed. As he is looking up towards Princess Henrietta, it drew my attention to her as it makes her look very powerful. It made me feel very small, as she was looking down at me. It felt like she had power over me too! It has lots of detail, which makes me look at it and all its different parts, for example, the embroidery of the gold curtain. I also noticed the tiny dagger you painted on Princess Henrietta’s dress. Why does she need a dagger? It makes her look cruel!

I don’t mean to be picky but I think you could have improved some aspects of the painting, such as giving the plants in the garden brighter colours. Also, you could have made the dress more colourful so that Princess Henrietta stands out even more. Additionally, you could have made the background more interesting.

When others view your painting, I think that they will say it is wonderful. I wonder whether the King will want you to paint a portrait of him, as I am sure he will be very impressed.

    From your dearest friend,
    Evie
P.S. It would be tremendous if you could paint a portrait of me!

  5. I think the painting is very good but Van Dyck could improve on the colour of her skin and make her head bigger as it look unreal.

  6. I loved the painting. I think Van Dyck has captured the essence of power and pride. But he could make her dress brighter and more noticeable to show her royalty.

    1. STAR POST

      Well done Edie.

You clearly explain why you like the painting while also providing possible improvements.

  7. 1st May 2015

    Dear Van Dyck,

Earlier in the week, we saw your splendid painting of Princess Henrietta of Lorraine in Brussels.

We were blown away by the realistic detail of the painting and we loved the intricate patterns on the dress and drapes. All of us were impressed by the jewellery, royal colours and style of clothing in the painting. This showed us how important and influential Princess Henrietta of Lorraine was.

Also, we liked the dagger because it changed our view of Princess Henrietta of Lorraine. At first look, we thought she was a beautiful, gentle lady. However, when we saw the dagger, we concluded that she might have been a ruthless, vicious person.

The roses included in the painting make us think the rose reflects Princess Henrietta’s personality. They are both beautiful to look at but dangerous to come into contact with.

We love this painting so much that we feel that there are no improvements to be made. Although, if we had to make a change we would paint a crown of roses around her head to highlight her personality and to make her look more like a princess.

    Yours sincerely,
    Jupiter Class

  8. King Class chose Bridie’s work to be placed on the blog because they found it humorous and feel that she addressed the informal letter style well. We like the details of the painting which she has included in her letter.
    What do you think?

    1. i loved the way you used things like ask it questions and i think it’s really sweat as well. WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Lady Henrietta and her page:

We particularly liked the detail in the painting, such as the symbols because they were small, but they told a story. They made Lady Henrietta seem mysterious, and as though she has a dark past and she is powerful. The servant makes her look wealthy because she looks like she has control over him. He is looking up to her and presenting her with roses. We think this is a sign of peace, maybe between black people and white people. She has her hand on his shoulder, we think to show that Lady Henrietta has respect for him.

    Letter to follow…
