Hi all,
First watch the film:

Why was it so important to the girl to get her hair the way she wanted?
What is the message of the film?
TASK:

That was a heartbreaking movie
Thank you for watching and being the first to comment.
Did you find the ending heartbreaking? I think it’s possible to see it as uplifting.
Remember to post your first name and school when sharing.
i found it kind of heartbreaking because her mum is not there and her mum had some good hair but now shes bold
Not the best film but very emotional
Thank you Dan. How would you improve the film but keep the emotional impact?
The story is sad on the start but at they end its happy.
I agree Diar. Our emotions change as the film develops.
it was a very heartbreaking story
I found it very heat breaking but the good thing is they got see see the mum and learn how to do hair
Hi Eva,
Yes it is a moving film but I think it ends on a positive note. Would you agree?
1.It makes me feel that no matter happens family is family.
2.The author called it hair love because maybe her mom is a hair doer and she loves hair.
3.Because she loved and idolized her mothers hair and her hair styles.
4.Hair isn’t just a thing on your head, it can carry feelings ,emotions, worries it carries it all.
Thank you Harun for your thoughtful responses.
I like your message from the film.
Do you think you could share a guide on how to something with us?
The film made me feel quite sad but also happy and I found it funny when the hair was beating up the dad in a boxing match. The director may have called the film Hair Love because, at first the dad doesn’t know how to do it but then he learns so they’re showing love through doing their hair. Also, the picture that the daughter does is of her mum with no hair but with a crown on like a queen, and that love made her feel happy about having no hair, which made her take of her head scarf. The girl wanted her hair perfect because she was really exited about her mum coming home, so she put a nice dress on and wanted to make her mum happy because she always used to do her hair. The message of the film is to not give up and to help each other.
A lovely responses Gertie. Very thoughtful. I found the boxing match with the Dad funny too.
You give some interesting reasons why the film might be called “Hair Love”. Can anyone think of any other reasons?
It was a bit sad and when the girl go to see her mom who has cancer is was heart warming
Thank you Yaacob. Yes the film produces different emotions.
What do you think makes the film a bit sad. Can you point to a particular bit of the film and explain?
1. it makes me feel that life dosn’t always workout so i felt sypathy for her
2. i think its called hair love beacuse she cares about her hair as what i suspect is her mum has lost her hair due to cancer.
3.hair is not just for style it shows who you are no matter if you have long ot short hair or even bauld it carrys your instincts
Thank you Brody for your responses.
I agree it does create sympathy. Who do we have the most sympathy for and why? Or does it change throughout the film?
I find the idea of hair being more than style and showing who you are interesting. I wonder if you could tell us more.
i thought this story was very heartwarming and sypathetic. this shows hair is a big part of us and it can be frightning when we loose it so i think the girl wanted her hair nice to make her mum happy. because having cancer or hair loss can be
terrifying and no one should have to go through that pain. However cancer or hair loss can bring famalies and frendship back together to defeat it for those suffering of it.
Thank you Brody. I like the way you’ve seen the positives in the film and situation.
1)It makes me feel sorry for the girl because she didn’t know how to do her hair but it also makes me feel happy for the girl because her father did her hair eventually.
2)Because the girl loved the way people did there hair.
3)So she could show her mum.
4)Family is family
Thank you Miraz. What did you think of the scene when the Dad appears to be wresting with the hair?
How did that scene make you feel?
It made me feel quite sad for the man because he just wants to do his daughter hair and he ends up imaging he is fighting with the girls hair.
Yes Miraz, I agree. We feel sympathy for all 3 characters at different points in the film.
I found the fight with the hair amusing.
1.It made me feel that family is more important then anything
2.Because the story is about family and that hair can show your personality
3.Because the girl wanted to make her mom remember her when she didn’t have cancer
4.That family is more important then anything and your appearance shows your emotions and not just makes you pretty or handsome or ugly.
Thank you Samuel.
I’m interested in the idea appearance shows your emotion. Can you tell us more?
1.It makes me feel quite sad because I think her mom has cancer but also happy because the mom and family is happy and the mom doesn’t care about she has cancer she still thinks she is beautiful.
2.I think the author called it hair love because even if you have cancer you still have to love your hair.
3.I think because it reminded her about her mom because her mom did that.
4.The message of the film is to love your hair even if you have cancer and be proud and happy about it.
Thank you Leila for your thoughtful responses.
1.it makes me feel emotional and happy because the family got together even though the mom had cancer .
2.Think the film is called hair love because the little girl really missed her mom in the hospital and the dad did not give up to make the little girl happy.
3.i think it is important because it will always remind her of her mom but the mother is not dead.
4.i think its to never give up on anything and keep going and try your best and don’t make other people sad and sometimes give them what they want if its important. ♡
Thank you Marwa for your thoughtful responses.
1- At first I feel really bad for her because at the start she loves hair transformation but she can’t do her hair but slowly threw out the story I felt proud cause she never gave up and she asked for help to her dad , but it never really went how she wants it the first time but they tried again
2-because her mum might have cancer hair loss and the girl really loves hair but the sad part is she had flashbacks of her mum doing her hair but not everyone has hair
3-that it’s a struggle doing hair and not everyone has hair some people love doing hair. Boy don’t have hair and some have long hair, girls don’t have hair and some girls have long hair
Thank you Manaal. You’ve identified a technique the director uses: flashbacks. Flashbacks enables directors to play with time sequences so they can show the past.
It’s about a girl who tried fixing her because she didn’t like how it is
so people start loving their hair
because she wanted to meet her mom who had cancer
love your hair the way it is
Thank you for your responses Amira. We hope you enjoyed the film?
1. it made me feel that no matter what you look like your family will still love you.
2. I think that the message of this video is to never give in the hardest of times and push through.
3. The thing that made me sad is the part were the man couldn’t do the hair and the daughter went into her room.
4. the thing that made me happy is when the farther and the daughter met the mum in the hospital.
Thank you Leon. I like the message you’ve identified.
1. It made me feel sad because the mum has cancer
2.She loves her hair
3.Remind her about her mum
4. Generous
Thank you Darlington.
I wonder if you could tell us more about your fourth answer and the idea of generosity in the film?
The story was very emotional i liked that it had a moral to the story which was to be confident and never give up no matter how hard it.
Thank you Clqris. Do you think the film had a moral or message? Are they the same thing or different?
What different feelings does the film make you feel? Happy and sad because her mom has cancer. Happy because her dad done her hair the way she wanted .
Why might the director have called the film “Hair Love”? Its called it hair love because its showing you to love your hair and appreciate it before its gone.
Why was it so important to the girl to get her hair the way she wanted?
To show she doesn’t need her mom to do her hair because she has a dad.
What is the message of the film
Always appreciate .
Thank you Aisha. I hadn’t considered the idea of appreciating your own hair.
1 Sad and happy because first she was sad that she couldn’t do her hair but after they watched her mums video that how they should make it . But when her dad made her hair she felt happy and she felt happy for seeing her mum but it is sad for her mother.
2) Because the girls hair wasn’t that nice so she was trying to make it more better and maybe that’s why the films name is Hair love because she wanted her hair to be more better.
3)Maybe because so she visits her mum in a beautiful way or maybe that was the way that her mum did her hair before her mother was cancer.
4)It might send a message of being helpful because her dad helped her make her hair
Thank you Zelal. I like the way you identify how feelings change throughout the film.
❤️so emotional!
What different feelings does the film make you feel?
This film makes you feel sad and happy. At first, the girl was happy because she was getting ready to get her mum home from the hospital. She wanted to look nice. Then, when her dad could not help her, she was sad as she thought she was not going to look pretty for her mum. Finally, the girl shared the video and he followed the steps and got it right. They went to the hospital and they were all happy!
Thank you Austin. You’ve tracked the different emotions in the film very well. Do you think the music influences our emotions?
Why might the director have called the film “Hair Love”?
Because her mum has no hair but the girl still loves her.
Also, her mum had a blog called ‘Hair Love’ and at the end of the tutorial the mum said ‘ made with love’.
Thank you both. I like the way you’ve recognised two different possibilities.
Why was it so important to the girl to get her hair the way she wanted?
She wanted to look pretty for her mum when she visited to the hospital and possibly remind her of all the times she had done her hair. This was also a special day because it was the mum’s last day in hospital.
Thank you Ayoub and Nasren. I agree with you. Maybe she also wanted to show her Mum she could overcome her struggles?
What is the message of the film?
1. Take care of your hair.
2. Even when people do not loo exactly as they want, we should still show them a lot of love.
3. Even though her mum is sick, she still loves her daughter the same way.
Thank you Austin and Salman. I like the message you shared at number 2.
1. The film makes me feel a bit emotional but that anything is possible.
2.The director probably called it hair love because it is about loving your hair no matter what size it is.
3. The girl didn’t want her hair to out she wanted to look nice
4. I think the message of this film is about that we should take care of ourselves
Thank you Aaron.
I hadn’t thought of the message about taking care of ourselves.
So I really liked it and found it inspirational and motivating. I also think it’s called hair love because the father didnt know how to do hair but found love in doing ig . I’ve watched it before but watching it again was amazing!
Thank you Dafina. I’m pleased you enjoyed it.
I like the idea of the Dad finding love while trying to style the girl’s hair.
Thank your Mr Walsh. I also just wanted to say that the picture that the daughter does is of her mum with no hair but with a crown on like a queen, and that love made her feel happy about having no hair, which made her take of her head scarf. The girl wanted her hair perfect because she was really exited about her mum coming home, so she put a nice dress on and wanted to make her mum happy because she always used to do her hair. The message of the film is to not give up and to help each other.
Well spotted Dafina. I agree she sees her mum as a Queen. It’s a lovely moment in the film.
Same dafina I agree
This made me a bit sad but it was also funny when the dad was fighting the girls hair
Yes Safwan. I found that bit funny too.
I think the story was called hair love because the daughter liked hair because the daughter and her mom liked to do it together. I think it was so important for her to get the hair style she wanted because her mom helped her do it and her mom has cancer now.
Thank you Tahmid. Do you think she was trying to cheer her Mum up?
This video made me feel happy that she likes her hair
I think the message of the film is that love yourself and be yourself
Thank you Alfie for sharing a meaning with us.
That wa sa truely inspiring message because how that girl wanted and was determined to do her hair for that special day for her mother was so heart warming and how I thought it was funny at first but then I saw the real meaning of this video to just start and be confident and that’s what the dad did and at the end it was so cute and I loved how the mother loved her curls but because she had cancer it got shaved but she was feeling down but when her daughter gave her that picture she felt love and confidence so she felt the love that everyone gave her so this clip was a true good one
Thank you Sofia. I agree determination is an important concept in the film. Can you think of examples when the characters are determined in the film?
That film was so sweet! I cannot forget something like that… It was beautiful!
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Remember to leave your name next time.
I think that she should love her hair no matter what your race or how your hair is
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us Zineb.
1. The film makes me really emotional 2. it means that you should love your hair no matter what it is and always should take care of it 3.it is because she loved her mother’s styles and wanted the same exact thing for her hair
Thank you Zineb. I hope you enjoyed the film even if it made you emotional?
I understand why the movie is called hair love. Probably because the girl loved her hair so much. It was so important to the girl to get her hair done the way she wants because they she was going to visit her mum. The message of the film was that you don’t need hair to look beautiful.
Thank you Sarah. What do you think the film says you need to beautiful? I agree it’s not hair.
The girl makes me feel happy in the story Its fun to do its impoternt to her because she likes the hair stile the mesage of the fill is about kindneess
Thank you Ela. Kindness is important in the film.
This short film is actually really great but kind of sad at the same time, but at the end it had a happy ending. Because the mom ended up getting out of the hospital and I think why the director called this short film “Hair love.” Is because the girl gets her hair done and the dad actually cared for her. And also why the girl wanted to get her hair done is because she was about to visit her mom in the hospital with her dad, that’s all I have to say about this film. It took some time to animate what it is currently is, as far as I can tell.
Thank you Sulaiman. That’s an interesting point you make at the end about how long it would take to animate. I agree it would have taken a long time.
I dont get how this is heart breaking its just hair stuff and y is the mother bald
Hi Yasin, As others have posted it seems likely the mum had cancer. When you have cancer you get treatment which can make your hair fall out.
1.This film makes me feel happy about my own hair.
2. The director called this film hair love to make you feel good about your hair and to love it even if you do not have hair and the girls dad got fond of hair by doing it to his daughter
3.It was so important for her because she was about to get her mom back.
4.i think the message is to love your hair care for it and treat it right .
Thank you Kingston. It’s interesting the film has made you consider your own hair more.
What different feelings does the film make you feel?
Emotional, happy, sad, proud, love.
Why might the director have called the film “Hair Love
So you can love your hair, like take care of it and make a style however you want it to be.
why is it so important to the girl to get her hair the way she wanted?
Because that’s very important to her as it reminds her of her mother and her hair was a bit messy.
What is the message of the film?
I think it had a very powerful message about love, caring and not giving up. Its also about belief, because the girl and her dad wasn’t giving up and believing they could do it! Be proud of your achievements.
Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful response Zayan. I agree belief is important.
I found it very inspirational and showed me to love my hair thank you
Thank you Zion for sharing your thoughts.
I thought this story was very strange and surprising. I liked the bit when the dad was in the wrestling arena and was fighting the hair. He director might’ve called it hair love because the girl wants her dad to love hair. The girl wanted her hair the way she wanted it because she likes her hair. The message of the film is to have courage and love.
Thank you Finley. Yes courage seems important in the film. Can you give an example of characters showing courage?
1. The film makes me really happy and sad at the same time its a really emotional kind of story so its really cool
2. I think they called it Hair love as the mother is passionate about hair and the little girl wanted to have her hair how her mum usually would do it.
3. I believe it was so important as it reminded her of her mum and she wanted to show her mum.
4. The message of the film is that hair isn’t just something on your head it can be your heritage your own story and more.
Hair as heritage. That’s an interesting idea. Can you tell us more?
1. It made me feel sad at the beginning because the dad could not do it but later he was happy and did the hair because he watched a video.
2. The person who made it did this because they showed love throw hair.
3. She wanted this because her mum had a youtube channel about hair and she wanted to continue her mums work 660k subs that’s a lot of subs.
4. The message is never to give up I think.
Thank you for your responses Edward.
It was a very heartbreaking movie but a happy ending also did she have cancer because she had hair and now she is bold!
Thank you Scarlett. What makes it a happy ending?
Umm because they go home together happily
And I love the movie it so kind and heartbreaking
I’m glad you enjoyed it Scarlett. I hope you like the second film too but it is very different.
What makes it a happy ending is the mum goes bold because of cancer but her daughter still loves her
What does this make me feel: This short film makes me feel sad, but at the same time in a way I feel happy.
Why do I feel that way: I think I feel this way because the mum is ill but her daughter comes and cheers her up and they go home.
Does this make me think of a person or memory: This story takes me back to the celebration of life we had when my grandad passed away, because memories of him were happy, but losing him was quite sad.
Hi Simi,
Thank you for sharing a personal story with us. I’m glad you can see a connection with the film and have happy memories.
I was very emotional and I was ever sad when I saw her mother without any hair but at least she grown hair and I like how she tryed to fix her hair and her dad tried and he did after a few tries but he did it
Hi Safa,
Yes it’s a moving film but hopefully you found the ending uplifting?
I thing that at the end of the film it gave some happiness and joy for the girl Zuri at last her mum was home.
Thank you Indika.
1. Why did the girl run?
