Dear all,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, impressions, writing and art so far.
In week 3 we study “A Coast Scene with Fishermen Hauling a Boat Ashore (‘The Iveagh Sea-piece’) c.1803 Joseph Mallord William Turner.
We look forward to reading your responses below.

What surprised me was how the waves were pushing the boats forward onto the sand, but there was only one boat that was at the back, still in the sea.
I was interested in the fish, because I didn’t realise that they caught fish during a storm. It seemed like a big storm and some of the fish may have gone away.
I was surprised by how realistic the painting looked, because I could see the waves were strong and pushing the boats onto the sand.
Thank you Pelin. Yes you get a sense of the power of the sea from the painting.
We imagined we had stepped into Turner’s painting, and we were stood on the beach watching the stormy scene. We have used some great descriptive language and also personification and similes.
Thank you all for your wonderful responses.
I feel that the painting has come alive through Mikail’s writing. The children picked up on the fact that the mood of Turner’s scene was depressing, sad and threatening. This comes through in the writing.
I love the idea that the heavy rain has made the sand dull! A fantastic piece of writing this morning from James with lots of vivid images coming through.
Im surprised by the waves because there tuff water.I also like the men strugling to pull the boat shore. What cached my eye is the fishermen was chilling.
I find the painting interesting because the crashing waves look awesome also some parts are dark and some are light. I like how in the picture there is a lot happening. The thing that catches my eye the most is the people trying to get the boat and its cool that there all actually working together
I like the part when JMW Turner drew the boat in the back because it really makes the scene more dramatic also what I think of the painting is very brilliant because I love all the detail that’s added to the scene!
I loved how there’s loads of exiting things in the painting but your’e attention really drags to the men pulling up the boat right in the middle. I also think another thing that drags your’e attention is the stormy sky with the sinking ship under
Thank you Elizabeth. Why do you think those details stand out?
The thing I like about this painting is the action, the crashing waves and the clouds, the man sat on the ship doing nothing it’s quite funny and I really like the dead fish on the bay.
I really like this beautiful , facinating peice of art because I like how this artist did the rain in the backround like you would see it in real life .
JMW Turner is amazingly talented !
I really enjoyed the fact that the painting has lots of details and the bright touches of red.
J.M.W Turner’s talent for painting is really good!
I was facinated, by the captin on this giant boat it was funny as well because the man is smoking a pipe while all the other people are working hard and he’s relaxing so it makes it unique and different. This painting is very interesting, because even though the painting is still it feels like its moving!I love this piece of art its amazing!
Thank you Dolly. How do you think Turner creates this sense of moving waves?
I really enjoyed the fact that the painting has lots of details and the bright touches of bright red.J.M.W Turners talent for painting is really good!
I find the painting very dramatic because there is a boat stuck, there is a thunder, and fishes in a basket but I can also see a man on a boat just smoking his pipe like there is nothing happening !!. I like it because it’s such a good scene.
Yes Safia. The man’s relaxed pose is quite different to the drama unfolding behind
I find this painting eye catching because he added a touch of red.
Yes Oliia. Where is the touch of red? Why is it important?
i liked the men pushing the boat and it looks very difficult the gloomy sky thats whats making me interesting
I think that Turners painting has so much things to look at and I like it also because theres a lot of colour plus it looks very dramatic
its very good
I love the painting because it’s so facinating JMW Turner is incredible.I am surprised by how detailed it is,Turner is truly amazing.
Thank you George. Perhaps you could research some other Turner paintings?
I Love This Paintitng Because there are many wonderful scene the people pushing boats and stuff with the stormy skye
painting looks good because i like the waves on the water and the sand looks magnificent i like the fishermen fishing and the fish are in a cage and the boat in the background looks good because its kinda wavey and i like the boat n the river because it looks like its about to fly.
About to fly? Yes I guess it’s riding a wave.
i am surprised that the storm is blowing over and i think the couler are eye drawing
I like this painting because I like the blue ocean. I also like this painting because of the people pushing the boat!
I’m glad you liked it Amogh.
I like hawking in the olden times because the painting is so detailed and I like the face on the man’s horse.
I like how in the painting by JMW Turner has so much detail and the colour really stands out but what really, really catches my eye is how there is a fisherman pipping as if it was an every day occasion.
Yes Jojo. How do you think Turner makes him stand out in the painting?
I like this painting because JMW Turner added so much detail.I like that he putted some realistic fishes like someone is fishing.
Good spot Lorin. Small details make a big difference.
I think the painting is amazing because I like the old styled boats.
I find the painting amazing because J.M.W Turner did so much action in the painting and it’s unbelivable .The waves really look like they are crashing down.
Thank you Katherine. Yes they do look realistic. How do you think he achieves this?
l like the painting because I love the people who are trying to move the ship.
I think the painting looks really realistic and I felt like I was there.
I like how the sky looks gloomy and murky and the waves are crashing into the boats.
The waves look very detailed and the shading looks really lovely.
Good observation Arya. Can you tell us more about the shading?
What is really good about this painting is that it seems 3D
Why is the man sitting on the stained, mahogany chest smoking a pipe, not helping anyone?
The picture looks amazing!
When you look at the painting carefully you can find a story.
The painting looks scary, imagine if you were in the middle of the storm. How would you feel?
Good question Mert.
I wish we could do more writing on this painting.
That’s good to hear Batu. You can always write more and share it with us on the blog?
I really like how there was so much to write about this painting and that you can understand the story behind it because of the detail.
I like the way that the sea and the fish look real.
I am confused because all the fisher men are helping eachother apart from the one man chilling smoking a pipe.
Yasin, it appears he worked on a different ship and is now relaxing.
I like the way it looks 3D, it feels like I am in the painting.
I agree Thao. How do you think the painter makes us feel that way?
Why isn’t the man helping the crew? What is he doing?
Good question Jake. It looks like he’s relaxing.
