Hi all,
Thank you for your brilliant thoughts and poems so far.
Our final poem is a bit different. It’s by Gwendolyn Brooks and is called “The Bean Eaters”. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
The Bean Eaters
Gwendolyn Brooks, 1917 – 2000
They eat beans mostly, this old yellow pair.
Dinner is a casual affair.
Plain chipware on a plain and creaking wood,
Tin flatware.
Two who are Mostly Good.
Two who have lived their day,
But keep on putting on their clothes
And putting things away.
And remembering . . .
Remembering, with twinklings and twinges,
As they lean over the beans in their rented back room that
is full of beads and receipts and dolls and cloths,
tobacco crumbs, vases and fringes.
I think this poem is unique when using different description. It really captures your imagination and makes you picture in your head .
tThe bean eaters is a very good poem which is written by Gwendolyn Brooks when i read it at first it made me want to eat beans but i also felt bad for those people who rented that room and could only afford beans for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. The beans are only 99p which was the only thing they could afford any other type of food.
how do you know that
i really like how it talks about the people and what they are doing. and i hope everyone else likes this poem too and enjoys it too. it has a lot of ryhming coplets and makes a lot of of sense to me thats why i really like this poem.it is not like anyone elses poem he has thought about it himself and checks it himself and it is a really insperating poem for children and adults that enjoy poems.
I like that poem
Hello sachin, why did you like it?
I like this poem its epic
I feel sorry for the two people because they only have a small place to live and don’t have a wide range of food like we do. I really like this poem because it makes you think about people who don’t have what we have and gives you a better understanding for these people.
Thank you Sebastian. How does Brooks make us feel sorry for the couple?
this is the best poem ever please make a one more please i beg u.[you are the best michael]
why is it the best poem ever.
I totally agree!
why do you agree
He lists most of the things in their room and that makes you feel that they don’t have very much things and belongings because some people wouldn’t be able to list all their things because they have so much. Then if you are one of those people you think about if you really need all that stuff.
Yes the listing seems important and as you suggest shows how little they own. Thank you Sebastian.
Good Job Seb You Lucky To Get FeedBack From Michael Walsh. “U ARE FAMOUS”
I think this is quite a sentimental poem about a poor couple.
Hi Reuben I agree what evidence is there that it is a poor couple.
Why do you think its about a poor couple.
In the bean eaters poem made by Gwendolyn Brooks I feel sad for the two people because they only have one room to share which is small. This shows that they are poor and can only eat beans to survive since it’s cheap. It’s also very unhealthy to eat the same food everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
The corn eaters
They eat corn mostly, this old and yellow pair.
Dinner is a rare affair.
Plain old clocks and plain old wood.
Tin cutlery.
Two who are poor and lonely.
Two who have kept their promises,
And keep on building up their lives,
And keeping things alive.
And thinking . . .
Thinking with smiles and frowns,
And lean over the corn in the back street that is full of smashed glass
And splinters and bottles and crockery ,
Bread crumbs, door hinges and picture frames
George
Thank you George. I enjoyed reading your poem and see how you’ve altered the original.
I like this poem as it shows how we can tell that these people are poor, but she did not say the word poor. She used words such as plain and casual and used description that made us think that this couple could not afford many things.
The Nobles
They eat delicacies mostly this old noble pair
dinner is a delicate affair
jewelled plates on a priceless glass table
silver spoons and forks,
Two who are very rich
Two who have worked their way
but keep on working
and working away
and remembering
working, wit twinklings and twinges
as they lean over their work in the castle that
is full of priceless artefacts, tables and sofas
this is a poem I have wrote inspired by the bean eaters
you have put thought in this poem and it sounds very nice.
Oh thank you.
They eat sushi mostly, this large old pair
Dinner is a posh affair
Two who like Japanese
Two who have spices in their noodles
They eat sushi 7 times day
And they do nothing but eat, eat, eat, eat
nice poem james.
The sushi eaters
They eat sushi most, this old orange pair
Diner is a formal affair
Table cloth silverware and evening dresses
Two how are spoilt
Two have served they’re purpose
But keep on writing checks
And living away
And remembering…
Remembering with twinkles and twinges
As they use chopsticks in their mansion
Full of art check-books diamonds dolls
And signed books
This my poem.
peace
They watch out for violence
and stop it straight away
the only thing they want is peace
they live on road
where they sleep
they cant afford a thing
but they don’t care
they whish for a home
but they thought if they had peace they would have a home and a nice life
Thank you for sharing Eren.
What gave you the idea to do a poem like this Eren?
I like how your poem was about peace because it showed how peace can bring happiness.
I also made my own poem.
failure and successes
failure is the penalty
when you get things consistently wrong
successes is the opposite
when you get things consistently right
failure puts you down in despair
successes makes you happy all the time
so look at yourself
are you failure or successes
or a bit of both
They eat nothing
They eat nothing this scary pair
when dinner comes there is nothing there
wardrobes filled with air and gas
tummy filled all night long
feathers as weights at the back of the store room
out of breath in seconds
dishwasher empty all the time
plates clean forever
They eat nothing
by Ashley
Adore this poem so much, well done i would definetely recommend you should put this in a book and publish it
who gave you the idea of ‘they eat nothing’
lonely, worried and cold
sleeping out in the moonlit sky
hungry and tired
begging to eat
people striding by with rich clothes
jealous and miserable
crying out for crumbs
thirty and desperate
putting out hats desperate for money
one coin, two coin, three coin, then food
This is my poem inspired by the bean eaters.
The Daydreamers
They lounge in a house,
battered and bruised,
all alone,
in a room.
They sit in thought,
carried away,
with twinklings and twinges,
in a world.
But they remember,
all time wasted,
and they understand,
that theres only time for one life.
By John
They are brave, this young muscly pair
dinner is a scary affair,
They have broken bones and heart.
two with a strong heart,
Two who will never give up,
and keep on fighting
for what they believe
She eats bread mostly this young pale girl
dinner is a desperate affair
little food little water
all laid out on a cloth
On who is mostly good
one who has bad days
but keeps cooling her bruises
and hiding her blood away
And remembering
remembering twinges and pain
as she leans over her pillow where she sleeps in the attic
full of dust, dirt, rubbish,
plasters and ice
The carrot eater
he eats carrots mostly, an old orange single
Dinner is a scary affair
the walls are damp the floor has rough concrete a box on the side
one who is mostly sad
one who saw his future
but keep on going
and running away
And remembering …
remembering with scars and plasters
as he leans over the carrot in his sleeping bag that is little on food and photos from the past.and all he has left is his carrots.
the bean eaters must be very poor because they can only afford beans, and they are using tin plates.
I think the poet describes them as yellow because there was some tobacco, and sometimes when you smoke, your fingers and your teeth can get stained yellow.
Lucy i dont think its the tabacco that had made them yellow i think its because they eat beans and they dont have enough nutrience in there body.
i love how you use yellow people because they only eat beans and there poor and i love this because that what happens
It makes me feel funny about the people in the poem
I was really inspired by this poem so i wrote my own. Hope you all like it even though it’s not finished.
The Bin Eaters.
They eat rubbish mostly,
this young, skinny pair.
Dinner is a hungry affair.
Using hands for forks,
And that’s all I wrote. Thanks!!
the chicken eaters
they eat chicken mostly the old couple pair
this is a fat affair
they eat and watch telly
the food digesting in their belly
two who are kind
two who has good in their mind
they all love each other
5 kids 2 nephews and 3 nieces
remembering and remembering…
as twinkling eyes glisten
they wanted to lean on their rocking chair one last time
they packed up toys chicken packets rocking chair and 2 pots of ashes
sad times do happen but I say this because when u eat too much protein u do get fat
and when u get fat u can get problems. In this poem they get cancer and their kids pack up to move with their uncle because their mom and dad has died
Remembering with twinkle and twinges
This is my absouletely favourite line in the poem i dont know why but its just gives this ullusion in my head of starts twinkiling and shining
I love this poem because it shows how their life is like and some people have lives like that so it is describing some peoples lives. For example it describes that they are poor and all that they eat is peas.
I love this because it really gets the reader in to the poem, for example it describes the people yellow
I was really inspired by this poem so i decided to write my own hope you like it !
The Bin Eaters
This tired pair
Dinner is a smelly affair
Sleeping on newspaper with a cardboard fort
Eating restaurant throw outs
Two who are mostly hungry
Two who have moved everyday
who keeps on packing up their cardboard box
And unpacking it again
And remembering with a twinkle their childhood homes
Holding close the pictures of them and their mothers alone
And the house that was full of happiness
And the house they called home.
well done i really enjoyed reading this poem {KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK}
great poem
i really like this poem but i also feel sorry for the people in the poem because they have a rented backroom and could only eat beans but im happy because the charity can donate money to them
i love how this poem describes how a lot of people were born with disabilities
