  1. He was a bit greedy and he wanted to take a shortcut to having food rather than working. I think i would do the same

    1. Thank you Santiago for your response. You’re our first poster! Let your friends know about the blog too.

Yes we can understand why the character takes the food but is it the right thing to do?
Remember to put your school name down when posting.

      1. understand why he took the food, it was obvious that it was quite hard for him so a shortcut would be easier. But what he doesn’t think about is the other person across from him who also finds it hard but instead of telling him he decides to be selfish and wants it for himself, even though he could share. But his selfish actions lead to bad consequences.

      2. i think it is the right thing to do because it looks like the person has no other way to get food and he is probably exhausted.

    2. the man was rotating a gizmo and at first could not get my head round what he was doing but i saw the fruit pop out and thought he must be growing some food.when he first touched the box he got given the power to grow extra fruit so i think he followed the box because of greed the other reason i think this is because if u got extra fruit from just touching a box i think everyone would touch the box if it was just laying about.when he goes to follow the box he enhances the weird mysteries magic still so there could be a devil luring him in i think he was interested and curious and was slowly suced into the (box)

    3. i think everyone in his position would do that because if you were stuck in the middle of nowhere and had to work for food but then u find this shortcut i would definitely take it

  2. We watched this same video at school way back in Year Three!
I think that the character had a reason to be greedy at first, but he let greed overtake him and, as other people have said, wanted to find a shortcut rather than working (like Santiago, I probably would have done the same). I believe that the same fate will befall the second man.

  3. I think that the first man was being really sad about having to turn that pole to make food then when he made a discovery he thought that he could make food and not have to do work. I think that the second man will do the exact same thing. I think his reason to be greed at first because it seems hard having to spin the pole to make food but when he discovered that he didn’t have to do work. The films message is always work hard at what you do and don’t let anything stand in your way.

    1. I think the man was greedy. But he had reason for it, the only way to make food was turning that pole for who knows how long!? Unfortunately in the end he did let greed overtake him, and from my views, the box almost ate him.

  4. I think that he is being selfish and not working and It isn’t the right thing to do. I think the second man will do the exact same thing and it would be a cycle. I think the films message is work hard and don’t let anything stand in your way, even if it benefits you.

  5. The first man must have been confused at seeing the cardboard box, as he is working seemingly in the middle of the Arctic. He was obviously curious at it, and when he touched it, he had the power to grow fruit by hand rather than with a machine. But because of this, he became greedier and greedier and wanted more. However, he failed to do so and the box swallowed him whole. Then the second man arrives, and does the exact same thing as his predecessor. I think there is a moral to this story. Don’t ask for too much.

  6. WOW , what a story and what a twist he must have been a greedy man never thankful for what he has as it said the greed overpowered him it did causing him to turn into the box I am sure this will happen to the next person and a cycle will eventually happen

  7. I think it was very disturbing and he was being very selfish and greedy. He should have only kept one apple and he was ungrateful. It was a good film and I am intrigued to see what would happen next in the story.

  8. We were really captivated by this short film! We were left in suspense when it finished, but we think the ‘circle’ in the title of the film tells us what will happen.

    1. Thank you Josh and Frank. A very interesting response. I hadn’t thought of the circle in the film title in this way before.

  9. “Finally I am out of the box!” said the man. “I cleverly lured that greedy man to take my place inside The Source. By the way where has it gone?” the man wondered. Whilst he was talking, the box containing The Source was so close to a tree it rained with apples and oranges!
The man went into the hut and lived the rest of his life fairly without greed.

    1. Thank you Harry. I enjoyed reading your writing. Its interesting how you’ve changed the ending to a happier one.

  10. I woke up one morning and pulled on my brown woollen coat, ready to start my day’s work. I cranked up the lever, for what felt like hours, and finally my reward appeared up on the tallest of branches on the tree. Reaching up, I pulled my meal down, I sank my teeth into the sweet fruit, finishing it in seconds. In the corner of my eye, I saw a box laying on the packed ice.

“A box in the middle of no-where!,” I thought, “what is it doing there?” Curious to see what it was, I walked up to it and bent over, my finger brushing against the box. When suddenly a rush of energy was passed from the box to my hands. The force was so powerful it sent me banging into the tree. I lent my hand on the tree, trying to shake off the power, but the energy from my hand was passed through the tree’s trunk and up to its branches, showering me with juicy fruits. “Is this heaven?” I thought, “because it sure feels like it! Having this energy source would be the answer to all my problems!”

Just as I was about to pick another fruit from the tree, the box started to roll away. I felt all my dreams slip away with every roll of the box. I couldn’t just stand there and let that happen, so I chased after it and tiptoed up to it. I could see that in the distance there was a hut, just like mine, but I couldn’t get distracted.

Suddenly the box stopped in its tracks, it was my time to shine. I pounced, and caught it, but when I got up, it was GONE! I noticed my hands had gone the same colour as they had when I’d touched the box before. Knowing that I had caught it, I started to walk back to my home. To my horror, my legs turned into boxes, and I fell face down.

Then, my bottom half was swallowed by the box. Taking my last glimpse at the world around me, I clawed my hands into the ground below, trying to climb out of this monster, but it was to late. Then in a blink of an eye, I was plunged into a void of darkness…

    1. Many thanks for sharing your writing Poppy. What a wonderful ending with the personification of the box as a monster. We hope you share your responses to the other resources when you get a chance.

  11. I watched the whole video and I think he is greedy and its like a video we watched called the black hole he was greedy and he got stuck in a safe in this he got greedy and then he got stuck in a box

    1. Ah yes Oliver. It is like the Black Hole. I’m sure other pupils have seen the Black Hole too.

How are the two films similar?

  12. He was being to greedy and wanted more of what he had got. the power what he got made him think that he did not have to work hard to get the fruit.

  13. I watched this video and I think it is very interesting and also very creative story affecting our imagination.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it Krystian. Perhaps you could watch the second film “Dangle” and share your thoughts.

  14. From Olivia at Eggars (transferred from old blog)

Personally, I don’t think that he was being greedy, I think he was just being curious. Seeing a moving box would make anyone curious and I think he just wanted to see what is was exactly. Later on in the story he keeps on running towards the box, even when he realises that he can’t get to it. I think in this part of the story he is being greedy because he’s realised that the box doesn’t belong to him but he still tries to get it. So the box trapped him because he was being greedy, but I don’t think he was being greedy earlier on in the story.

  15. From Olivia. Eggars School.

I agree with this comment but I don’t think that it’s literally going trap you inside whatever you take. This video was a good representation of it, but it’s not like whatever you take from someone else you’ll get trapped in. Also I don’t think that there is an exception, and that the director has made sure to show that quite clearly.

  16. I think it was a time travelling portal -I know it sounds a bit idiosyncratic but it does say it’s a SCI FI short film. I think he is not greedy at first but as he later realises he can get infinite food(kind of). I also had an idea that it could be an infinite paradox as it starts off with one man then he is cranking the tree, finds the box and gets eaten by the box. This will take him back to the portal he started in, he starts cranking the tree then finds the box, gets eaten by the box and the process reapeats infinitely.

    1. Thank you Oli. That’s an interesting angle on the film and not one that I’ve considered. How do you account for the box appearing to be making its way towards the second man at the end of the film?

      1. There was probably a man before the main one we see in the film as it COULD be infinite we don’t know how this ‘man and the box’ paradox would come around or end

        1. Hi Oli,

Yes I agree it seems likely there was a man before this one. Have you watched the second film “Dangle” yet? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

  17. He was just looking for an easy way out of something he’s probably been doing for most of his life. Also it could be a never- ending loop because the man at the end of the film looked just like the first man, therefore this could have been going on for centuries.

    1. Thank you Lincoln. You seem to have a similar line of thought to Oli. Make sure you review the second film too “Dangle”.

  18. I believe that the box has several other men trapped inside trying to lure more people in hoping it might pop with enough people.

  19. I think it may come across as him being greedy but maybe he works really hard and was really hungry and doesn’t get fed much so that’s why he wanted more

  20. I think that he has been left on a desert with no food and water and discovers an apple in the tree then he sees the box and goes over to it and touches it with his hand. Electricity goes inside his arms and he gets carried away thinking he has a superpower but instead he tries to catch the box when it’s running away .He then jumps on it not realising he was generating electricity inside his body .Somehow he then turns into a box and teleports to a blue thing. At the start (when he finds the box and it’s powers) he’s feeling curious and excited but at the end he’s feeling grumpy and doesn’t want anything to do with it

  21. Hi

My students are saying they can’t post anything so I am having a go. This is Charlotte’s response from Amery Hill Cheers Sam Rolfe

I feel like he was greedy abs inpatient so he wanted to keep touching the box to keep growing food and the guy at the end, I think the exact same thing will happen to him because he looks the same and spins the lever the same

    1. Hi Charlotte,

We received your post fine. Students just need to post in the comments’ section. There can be a delay as I have too approve all posts. Thank all the Amery Hill students for their posts. We look forward to receiving more.

    2. Hi I didn’t see that you put my response up yet so I put another reply on since you explained how to. I added a little bit more detail on too 🙂

  22. I think that the first man is wrong to be greedy because it all pays off near the end when he is “eaten” by the box. The moral of the clip is not to be greedy. Personally, i think the second man will also be “eaten” by the box because the clip ends
when he is looking curiously at the box.

  23. Hello, I am also an a wry hill student and i would like to share my response.
I think that the man may have lived in the arctic and wanted to grow fruits to enjoy the taste of something different as there is not really much food in the Arctic. But as soon as he realised the box was giving him fruits, he became greedy and wanted more. And at the end when he had been consumed by the box, history starts repeating himself

  24. I feel like he was greedy and impatient because he really wanted the box for himself, and did not think before he did something.

  25. I feel like he was greedy and inpatient so he wanted to keep touching the box to keep growing food and the guy at the end, I think the exact same thing will happen to him because he looks the same and spins the lever the same. I think what would happen now if the animated film continued, is I think he would touch the box, follow it, turn into a box, and another man would come out and turn the lever and it will all repeat again.

  26. Evie and Evie Owslebury Primary School

We think that the second man is released from the box when the first man gets trapped and is put back inside his house. We don’t think he will be tempted to touch the box because he is scared he will get trapped again.
We think that the box is teaching us not to be tempted by good things.

  27. I feel like the first man was – like many other students have said – was greedy. I was thinking that why he was greedy was because he was lazy and didn’t want to work. I feel like the second man will get caught in the cubes trap too.

  28. My thoughts are the he only cares about himself. Due to this act he is lazy and he suffered a major consequence which is turning into a box I think the moral if there is :Greed come to all of us.

  29. I felt as if as a result of the man living in the artic he was not used to having much, only enough food to live by and a warm house to live in. when he realized that there was fruit on the tree he felt amazed and ate it however when the box appeared and gave him lots more than what he was expecting he slowly began to become greedy, always wanting more and taking for granted what he already had. then the box took revenge on him by making him into a box. once he started to be taken over by the box I think he began to feel a sense of regret and annoyed at the fact that he had got himself into this terrible situation by doing something wrong.

    1. Thank you Lucy. You have highlighted the importance of the setting. Something for everyone to consider.

  30. The film was quite good because the animation was really great. I liked how greed ws being represented and how greed isn’t always the answer. I would like to see more of these films.

  31. I thought that at first the man was doing nothing wrong by touching the box as he was just probably confused and intrigued by it as he lived in the middle of the artic circle and may not have seen it before. I felt bad that the box had swallowed him up as the box could be a bad character and had tricked him. But, when I watched the video again I thought about who or what the box could represents and I thought that the box could not be a real thing and it represents the feelings of greed inside him and by chasing it it was him wanting more and more until he is swallowed up by greed. I think that it could be either of what I have said as he could not be greedy and it could just be that he has been working for a long time and when he had the opportunity to get free food (and he may not have realised that someone else lived a while away opposite him) he could take it because no one else was there or needed it. He could have also not been intending to take the box, he might have just wondered where it was going and if it was trying to take him somewhere. I think the cliffhanger at the end could have been trying to make people think about what will happen to the other man and I think (if the box did represent greed) that the other man would not follow the box which is showing that some people are greedy and some people are not.

    1. Thank you Lilly. It’s interesting that so many of you are starting to see the box as “representing” greed.

  32. The man needs sustainability to stay alive but the man becomes consumed by greed and wants the box for himself.

  33. I think the moral of the story is to always be grateful for what you have, your always more grateful for things you have worked harder for rather than taken or Been given
The box represents greed and how quickly it can consume you

  34. I thought the movie was full of creativity and had an important message to it.
The man was greedy and paid the price, trapped as a box forever! the horror!

  35. This short animation film has represented greed in my opinion and it shows that greed isnt the answer at all. It teaches us that we should work in order to recieve good things rather than looking for a shortcut and making your life easier by being lazy and greedy. I enjoyed this animation as it had given us a great life lesson and it was a good animation overall.

  36. the animation showed a man who normally did hard work until he found another way to get what he worked for the easy way and that same greed he wanted ended up consuming him as he tried to ask for help from someone who look like a relative/partner/neighbour.

  37. I think that he was looking for a easier way to get the fruit, and he found a box that dose what he wanted, so he keep using the box.

  38. I think the man was intrigued by the box at first and then he figured out that the box could get him food easier. The man wanted to do less work so he chased the box but ended up trapped inside the box. The video teaches us to not take the easy way and not be greedy or bad things will happen.

  39. i think the box is a creature that preys on the greedy and will slowly take over this small vain world with only the power of being humble to save the people!

this story teaches us a valuable lesson of hard work and don’t touch random boxes left by strangers.

  40. To be honest I wouldve been like the man. The man was greedy but he realised his mistake and that is what matters. Wow this was a cool animation

    1. Thank you Leon. Take a look at the second film Dangle I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

  41. I thought that the man was a humble man and when it came to greed, he was a bit too greedy that he tried to take a shortcut that didn’t work out in his favour. He ended up being the shortcut. watch it to see what I mean

  42. i think that the man was being lazy and not wanting to work for his food and when he finds out that the box can help him grow fruit he gets really greedy and starts using the box to get his fruit easily he no longer works for it. But when the box starts running away he chases it because he is getting to greedy and the box swallows him up and then the other man comes out of his house and the whole cycle will start again.

    1. There was a man with a very boring job he hated it but when he finished he loved the fruit he produced and generated he was very selfish and he never shared.

One day he woke up and he started his job of producing the fruit, all of Sudden a box in the middle of nowhere appeared, he thought it was really unusual because he had never seen a box in the desert, so he went to the box and touched it and it charged him with magnetic orange energy. It made him fly back to the tree, after that weird experience he held onto the tree and maintained a good grip. He managed to touch the tree and it grew lovely vibrant fruit. It looked lovely, he then went back the second time to try and catch the box. He did this so that he could have lots of free fruit. However the box kept on going away from him. Although he finally caught up with the box and His stomach made the box shrink and his belly got charged with orange connective energy. The box came back to life and grabbed his feet together soon his whole body was sucked up into the box.

Another man emerged, doing the same job as the first man had done he’s probably going to do what his predecessor did. The moral of the story for humans, is that it is trying to tell us about greed. To be greedy in life is not a good thing , there may be serious consequences, work hard in life. You may not see the rewards now but you may see it later, further God didn’t put us on this Earth to be greedy and selfish.

      1. Well that depends on your point of view, as some see earth as a safe haven to be taken advantage of, whereas some view our earth as a gift that should be treasure. Otherwise, great review.

  43. The Man did become greedy, and realised that if he could somehow catch the box and enhance its power, then he could grow fruit faster, and therefore not work as much. But i also think that the director wants us to see that the two outposts are almost creating perpetual motion, and with this theory in place i can almost guess that every time the man gets inhaled by the box, he possibly gets brainwashed and is created anew inside the opposite building. in this case we can deduce that as soon as we see the man open the door and wind the handle for fruit, a man has literally just been eaten by the box, and it is almost quite depressing in my eyes, as the man is unaware of the tireless circle he is being put through

  44. At first I did not think he was being greedy, and was only being resourceful in order to gain food to survive. If he trapped the cube, or made more food with it, he may or may not have shared it with the other people. Which could have decided better if he was greedy and selfish or not. I don’t think it was wrong of him to try and capture the cube because he didn’t know that it was going to absorb him, and by the looks of it, he had to work very hard to gain one piece of fruit from the tree. It may have looked less greedy if he called for the other man in his house to help him catch the cube and so maybe he did want to keep the cube all to himself, but you don’t know. I think the moral of this story is to be thankful and settle on what you have received, and not be greedy for more.

    1. Very interesting thoughts Bella. Yes I agree the feeling we have for the character would be different if he was sharing his food with another.

  45. i think that the man was being lazy and not wanting to work for his food.He realises that the box might be able help him grow fruit. He then gets really really greedy and starts using the box to get his fruit easiy, so he no longer has to work for it.

When the box starts moving away he chases it because he is getting greedy.

The box swallows him up and then the other man comes out of his house and the whole cycle will start again.

It is an example of greed and how the man wants more and more for less effort… it doesn’t work.

  46. I felt the man was lonely because he didn’t any friends just a tree and house. He was greedy because he was hungry. So he wanted more even though he had enough. I had mixed emotions about what happened. Sad that he had no one, cross because he was Greedy and confused to why he became a box!

  47. I personally feel the man is selfish because he wanted the box for himself, he acted on impulse as he had that inner feeling present within his body of sheer greed, this greed shone through in his actions and in doing so, the box took it’s own revenge.. To those who shone away from having the box to themselves, they were re-warded by being left alone!

  48. THE MAN WAS HUNGARY AND TRIED TO TAKE A SHORT CUT IN GETTING FOOD. HE WASN’T HAPPY THAT ALL THE EFFORT IN TURNING THE WHEEL, ONLY PRODUCED ONE FRUIT EACH TIME.WHEN THE BOX APPEARED AND SAW WHAT IT COULD DO, HE THOUGHT THE BOX WOULD BE THE SOLUTION IN GETTING FOOD WITHOUT THE EFFORT. UNFORTUNATLY HE BECAME CONSUMED BY THE BOX.
I THINK THIS WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN UNTIL SOMEONE IS HAPPY WITH WHAT THEY HAVE GOT.

  49. I think that the man was very foolish. When he was turning the pole to grow the fruit which he found was very time consuming, he saw a box and straight away he wanted it because he thought it would make his life easier. He ran out for it leaving what he had behind him not thinking of all the things he already had and needed. He had given into temptation, this was a bad thing so bad thing were going to happen to him. He was silly because he didn’t look at the bigger picture and the things he left that he needed to stay alive

    1. Thank you for your thoughts Skyla. I think the idea of temptation is helpful in understanding the film. Any other key concepts.

  50. I think that the man was working to get food and when the box got there he found out what it did . He let greed take over and that is why he got stuck in the box. it is showing us that greed should not take over.

  51. I think that It was ok to try it the first time, but trying to get unlimited food without work was very greedy.

  52. I think the man was working for his reward of the fruit until he saw the box and thought he could get away from doing the work. The story shows that he is greedy and the moral of the story is that greed should not take over.

  53. My thoughts are that the man was trying to get food .he wasnt very happy only gettingone fruit per time he was working. he decided to get way without doing any work but he got sucked into the box and didnt succed. he was very greedy and foolish for doing what he had done. he figured out what he had done.

  54. I think that he was being very lazy and not wanting to work for his food and just take a shortcut so he wouldn’t have to work.

  55. I think that this clip clearly demonstrates how tempted and greedy we can all get as people .He was finding life hard and a shortcut came along to answer all his problems and make everything so much easier but it came back to bite him and this is a lesson to anyone that no matter what happens you must always do things the right way .You must not cheat , do things half way or take the short cut to success . I guess it is like a wise person once said ,”There is no elevator to success , you have to take the stairs”.

  56. I also agree that he let greed overtake him. And if we saw another way to get what we want without working at all, we would touch the box too. I think that the other man is also going to witness what the box can do, and get trapped in it to (its like a repetitive cycle, it’s going to go on and on). Also what i have noticed is, that near the end of the clip it shows some dramatic irony that makes the clip end on a cliff hanger as we know that the other man is eventually going to get trapped in the box like the previous man did, but the character/man doesn’t.

  57. my thought about this is that he was very greedy and that effected his mind set to get the box and keep it for him self but at the end karam backfired to him and trapped him inside the box

  58. I think that the man wasn’t being greedy but just wanted to make his life easier for him. Even though people always say not to take the easy route, nearly everybody usually do make things easier for themselves. On the other hand, he did have quite an easy job to do and had everything that he would really need but, people always want more; nothing will ever be enough for humans because we are all a bit greedy. In my opinion, it would’ve been worse if the man had those powers and didn’t share any of the food with the second man , but just left them to rot away because he would never be able to eat all of them by himself. Lastly, I think he was also just a bit curious about the box because it was quite clear that he had a very simple life. In conclusion, the man was being a bit greedy, however everyone is greedy once in their life and everyone should have a second chance to rethink their choices; I suspect that the second man would’ve been pulled in
    as well.

    1. Thank you Maja. Your response shows empathy with the man and I like the way you’ve tried to consider a positive motive for his behaviour

  59. it is understandable why the man became so greedy. he had worked all day and only managed to grow one piece of fruit. so, when he saw the what the cube could do, he realised that if he got the cube, he would never have to work again. therefore his greediness got the better of him, but inevitably his greediness had him killed.

    1. Hi Sam,

Thank you for your response. I think it’s interesting how recent comments on the film are showing greater empathy to the man.

  60. he was greedy and thought that the box could help him but all it did was betray him or was that why the box was running away. The box didn’t want him to touch cause it new what would happen

  61. I think that the man was just greedy and didn’t want to work for food. The man should have kept on working for food and staying alive rather than using the box and getting trapped inside it. I think that the other man at the end was another man about to do the same thing, or the original man imagining what would happen if he touched the box.

  62. Good story! He shouldn’t have been greedy as he then either turned into/got eaten by the box. I bet the box was doing some sort of cycle thing, so that had happened to a load of other people, and will keep happening until someone doesn’t get too greedy.

  63. I think that the man is looking for something and also he should not have been greedy and was acting lazy and didn’t want to get his own food. This might have caused his mind set to change a bit and act a bit differently.

  64. I think that the man got very greedy and wanted more of the fruits and didn’t want to spin the crank every day and wanted infinite fruits.

  65. Woodroffe

I think its quite interesting, i guess the box will just keep on devouring people who want to take an easy and quicker route to what their desires are.
